If you’re a smart player looking for an uncompromising challenge, check out the Pelican Empyrean demo on Steam. It’s a roguelike cooking card game that challenges you to pay close and mindful attention, and to let go of all your assumptions #indiegame #pelicanEmpyrean

Another little round of polish updates to Pelican. This wildcard juicing is one of my favourites - accompanying a harmless little risk/reward towards the start of the game that can become a devastating run-destroying gamble towards the end. #pelicanEmpyrean #indiegame

I actually implemented the skull-magic system in the overworld for this (plus the first spell/ability that allowed you to shrink down and walk through hollow logs), but building all the extra 3D environments needed for this would have been a massive extra workload

• roguelike dungeons: inspired by Fidel's Dungeon Rescue, but using semi-procedural placement of enemies, weapons and health. Would have been a tricky system to balance, but a lot of fun to play! (the level editor lets you use enemies and weapons, which aren't in the main game's levels)

• a light-metroidvania overworld: ("metroidvania" in the very loosest sense) essentially some of the game's skull-spells would be used in the overworld to give you different traversal abilities and solve non-grid puzzles...

Pelican will be the 3rd game we’ve shipped. It’s interesting that even as a game without 3D environments and animated characters, it was almost as much work as our previous games - there’s a lot going on under the surface! #gamedev #indiedev

#afterLightFades started life as a Puzzlescript game around 2017. It was my first foray into sokobans and I loved how instantly experimental I could get with Puzzlescript. In that first 2 weeks I designed a ton of mechanics including advanced concepts like fire-spread and vine-growth. 🧵 #gamedev

Joon Shining was my first commercial game - I made the classic #gamedev mistake of thinking it’d just be a quick 3 month project, and of course it turned into 2 years! No regrets though, I think it really takes you on an adventure that’s lush with magical vibes #indiegame

One of our players on Steam pretty nicely summed up the After Light Fades experience as "slowly figuring out how to think for this game". It is a different way of thinking for sure, asking you to get lateral and synthesise a lot of disparate elements into a cohesive whole.

Joon Shining, our magical golf-like odyssey is 70% off on Steam. I chose the name Joon for the hero because I'm synaesthetic and I liked the purplish colour of the word, but I was pleased to discover it means "life" or "soul" in farsi! store.steampowered.com/app/1552600/... #indiegame #steamsale

Out of my 30 or so prototypes, After Light Fades became the one I chose to complete after having a particularly bad Gamescom where everything went wrong, and so I decided once again I’d need to take matters into my own hands and self-fund my next project. #gamedev #indiedev

The #afterLightFades level editor UI is a bit rough-and-ready, but it's surprisingly fluid to use. My main inspiration was Mario Maker 2 believe it or not, which I think is one of the most fun and conducive-to-creativity game editor tools I've ever used #gamedev #indiedev

After Light Fades’ development was a bit back-to-front. I made all the 100+ levels painstakingly by hand, and only after all that I made the level editor. It was intended just for players, but it worked so well that I went back and remade all the chapter 1 levels with it #gamedev #indiedev

Boring but necessary #gamedev day today - added controller support to #pelicanEmpyrean, thanks as always to Rewired for making it as painless as possible. It's live on the demo now if you want to try it out!

Check out this beautiful new piece for #pelicanEmpyrean by our artist Bella Field. It was going to be the end of game scene, but we both like it so much we want to make it the title screen instead #indiegame #gamedev #indiedev

Instancing experiment #3. All the foliage is instanced and the grass squashes down when you walk on it. Bricks will be instanced next as each one is individual - the buildings have been hand-erased to get the ruined look #indiedev #gamedev

The next iteration of my GPU instancing experiments. Performance is still pretty great with this high density of full-3D grass. A large amount of trees and bushes perform decently to a point, but setting up imposters will be the next step #gamedev #indiedev

After 10 years of using Unity I've finally achieved the elusive thing a million other game devs have already done - "having a scene full of grass that runs well" (via GPU instancing). The crazy thing is, it's not that much setup but Unity doesn't show a clear path to get there #gamedev #indiedev

A few more vistas from Joon Shining. Crazy that it's already been 3 years since we released this. It's a strange beast but we're still so proud of how it all came together. #indiegame #joonShining

And with this latest round of magical artefacts done, we're now artwork-complete on Pelican Empyrean, thanks to our wonderful artist Bella Field. Only the music left to go now! #gamedev #indiegame #pelicanEmpyrean
