Look, sportswriters in the US totally botch our domestic league awards year after year and these people have *one league* and *one competition* to pay attention to, much less an entire planet's worth of leagues and multiple competitions. People need to stop getting mad at the Ballon d'Or stupidity.

Arsenal’s burden, which is seemingly heavier than most other teams’, is that we have to win the *right* way. We either please them or our manager has to “defend” why we didn’t make them happy. This burden is assigned to us by the media - but also by a chunk of our own supporters. It is absurd.

“We’ve seen this Tottenham before, can they go to the next level” says Lee Dixon. That level being “lower mid-table” instead of “relegation risk”?

People expect me to take a sport seriously when most of the important matches start before lunch on weekdays and take most of the daylight hours? That sounds like something for a very small subset of people without jobs!

Curmudgeonly food content complaint/pet-peeve: People who use “flavor profile” when they mean “flavor”. Ok back to the regularly scheduled football moaning.

Rewatched the Rice goal from a couple of angles. If we had conceded that one we’d be irate about the two defenders who failed to pick him up over not very much territory. If our players did what those guys did our podcasts would have material for days (weeks?). A serious lapse so late in the match.

Timber as an offensive threat has been revelatory (small sample caveat). Different than him popping in a couple of set piece goals, he’s looked like an actually functional part of a fluid attack. It’s promising.

I think I found the most “not actually a thing we will make a thing because we have to make content” pieces of all time. “Who won the weekend” rankings. Clicked through out of curiosity. It’s as dumb as I expected. Might be worth a return hate-read at some point though.

This season there will be no “Arsenal Derangement Syndrome” thread. Instead it will be a slowly built collection of complaints about why we aren’t winning the way the punditry wants us to. A large sampling of fine whines, if you will.

We didn’t “play poorly” for 90% of the match, whatever Daniel Storey might say. There are two phases to football. In one phase we were pretty damn tedious. In the other we were typically excellent. Again, this is all about what others want, about their own visceral pleasure.
