New! Prof @bmittelstadt.bsky.social joined BBC Berkshire to discuss how the public subsidises the AI industry, through tax breaks, infrastructure and research funding, and access to land, water, electricity and public data.
Listen from 3:15:00: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...
He argues that companies seeking public support should owe us a ‘happiness dividend’, showing with evidence how AI helps people connect with each other, build meaningful skills and act autonomously.

New! If the public helps build AI through funding, data and resources, should it share in the benefits? Researchers from @oii.ox.ac.uk argue that citizens are effectively AI “shareholders” and that technology policy should aim for happiness and well-being, not just growth and risk reduction. 1/2

New! When US labs train AI models, it’s ‘fair use’. When Chinese labs do the same, it’s a ‘malicious attack’.Can Washington have it both ways? Lisa Klaassen, doctoral researcher at @oii.ox.ac.uk@socsci.ox.ac.uk@ox.ac.uk explores the double standard in her latest piece for Lawfare.
On Sept. 1, the Justice Department filed a brief supporting American AI companies’ right to train models on copyrighted text, but seems to criticize Chinese companies for similar conduct, a puzzle Lisa Klaassen calls the “distillation paradox.”
“The biggest question is: are they replacing human relationships, or are they working alongside them?” Dr Florence Enock, @oii.ox.ac.uk speaking to @olifranklinwallis.bsky.social about companion AIs. “That’s just something we don’t really have the data on yet.” More: bit.ly/4yaK6Gi

As AI fuels a rapid global expansion of data centres, the OII's Dr Ana Valdivia published commentary in Cell Reports Sustainability to discuss how data centres can be built and operated sustainably across environmental, technological & social dimensions.
www.cell.com/cell-reports...
Dr Valdivia highlights that alternatives such as chip-level cooling and renewable energy remain at an early stage, while many governments still lack specific legal frameworks to regulate the industry.
www.cell.com/cell-reports...
Finally, she calls for local residents to have a democratic say over whether data centres operate near their communities, and for environmental metrics to be made publicly available and independently monitored.

Over two days in Oxford, 40 colleagues from the OII and TUM Campus Heilbronn came together for our Autumn Meeting, a chance to share research, test new ideas and spend time in conversation with one another across seven panels.
Here’s a glimpse into day 1, when the programme moved from AI, privacy and security through to the uses of AI in research and higher education, before turning to how humans and AI work alongside each other in the workplace and what the frontiers of the technology might look like.
Thank you to everyone from both institutions who brought such generous thinking and curiosity to the room, and to our colleagues at TUM Campus Heilbronn for making the journey to Oxford. We're already looking forward to continuing the exchange!
