Gave the kids the choice of seeing any (kids) film that’s on in town this morning, as their football was cancelled, and they’ve gone for the animated Tim Burton film that was released at least five years after he made anything even approaching watchable 😩

That Cold War thing applies to le Carre and The Circus, never bought it for Bond, he was a WW2 relic not a Cold War one

All the discourse about James Bond being a hopelessly outdated relic of the Cold War has to contend with the fact that the best James Bond film was released in 1995.

A very funny book about relationships ending, the way illness changes our lives, and gassing badgers

Salt Books@saltpublishing.com

Happy publication day, Rob Palk! 🦡 Animal Lovers is out today: a very funny, quietly devastating novel about a man whose wife leaves him for the badgers. ‘Hilarious, poignant’ – Daily Mail www.saltpublishing.com/products/ani... #AnimalLovers #NewBooks #IndiePublishing

A new Susanna Clarke is almost here... a long-lost chapter in the lore of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, The Bishop of Durham Attempts to Surrender the City is an illustrated short story set in 12thC Durham with a vexed bargain between the city's bishop and the fairy host... Can't wait! #SFF 🪐📚💙

I do love my nieces and nephews and so on, but after a meal out where three couples brought seven raucous children between them, sloping off to The Ship Inn afterwards with a fellow childless friend and slagging them all off over a couple of Guinnesses (in front of the fire) was heaven.

Seen the trailer for Gerwig’s Nephew/Narnia film, Jardis going nuts in London look fun while everything else looks a bit by the numbers, so similar experience to reading the book

Enjoyed Sense & Sensibility for the most part, but must admit it was a bit of a relief when Fiona Shaw turned up and livened it all up a bit. Bit too much earnest yearning interspersed with beautiful cinemagraphed shots of hands brushing over sun dappled greenery up till that point.

George Mackay started looking a bit like my cokehead ex brother in law by the end, which spoiled all that Bronte-ish running through scenic rocks a bit

Off to see a band I quite liked back in the day, but far too done-in for any new music, so willing and ready to obnoxiously heckle any song later than about 2007

Don’t know the story behind this support band, but very sad their set didn’t end with the care home staff catching up with the guy who was broken out by his grandsons for one last gig, leading to an exciting chase out the back of the venue

There’s like five Coral songs I love, they played two at the start and properly got my hopes up, but then kept the rest till the end, almost like they know what they’re doing

Have stopped by The Head of Steam for a warm up pint, also fondly remembered from about twenty years back, sadly without the many bitchy musicians I used to drink here with it’s (sob) just an average little bar

JRR Tolkien: You paint that picture of the key scene from the Two Towers where Frodo and Sam fight Gollum? Donato Giancola: Sure did, Ron, real fuckin' sexy just like you asked. JRRT: What.

The Taming of Sméagol Donato Giancola

I rather enjoyed ‘The Shape of Water’ but it’s getting a bit much that every lovecraftian fish monster thing now has to morph into tedious romance

Hoping for a ten minute monologue from Alan Moore on the subject of how much he hates superhero movies (and the people who watch them)

Marvel fans need to prepare for "a very surprising ending" to Avengers: Doomsday, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have teased. https://bit.ly/4z1aMtK
