#VHSfeature 👾 preserving videogame heritage isn’t just about preserving the games themselves; it’s also about preserving ephemera like development and promotional materials. One of the highlights of our collection is the larger than life Monument Valley model

Created for a marketing video for Monument Valley III, the model wasn’t built to be preserved after filming. When it arrived at the museum, the figures were missing, and numerous spots were damaged. After a condition check, conservation work began 🎉

Originally released in 1981, the BBC Micro was developed by Acorn Computers as part of the BBC Computer Literacy Project. A popular object at the museum, it provides a hit of nostalgia for museum visitors that attended school in the 80s 📸James Ravilious, 1984. Beaford Archive

Cosmetically, the computer was in perfect condition. However, after a loud pop and a puff of smoke, it was clear that it was in need of repair. Thanks to the hard work of our technician (and a replacement power supply), the Micro is now back in working order

The UK has been at the forefront of the global videogames industry for more than 40 years. But much of this incredible history risks being lost. We need to understand what exists today so we can help protect it for the future.

Next up - discussion How Do We Collect? - featuring curators multiple National Museums describing respective approaches and priorities. Again, recognition - can’t be a singular collection but what is needed is “a vision for a distributed ecosystem of care.”

Membership to the Videogame Heritage Society is free and open to all ✨ Though founded and run by the NVM, the society is guided by representatives from the BFI, British Library, V&A, Science Museum Group, National Museums Scotland, Bath Spa University, and Rebellion 👏

Currently, there is no official framework for how to preserve videogames and videogame heritage. The NVM created the VHS to fill this gap, bringing together people involved with videogame preservation (from institutions to private collectors) to share knowledge and collaborate on challenges

Plastic overlays that stuck to the front of your TV screen via static electricity were developed to provide backdrops for each game. The included Roulette game might just be white dots circling the screen, but with the overlay it suddenly became an in-home casino (and in colour, no less).

Whilst officially released in 1972, the machine’s design process began in 1966 when Ralph H. Baer had an idea to use an ordinary television set for purposes far beyond passive viewing, including playing interactive games.

Recognised as the first home videogame machine, the Magnavox Odyssey is a far cry from the consoles we know and love today. Because of the technical limitations of the time, the Odyssey could display only a limited selection of white dots and lines on TVs.
