After Claudia Goldin became the first woman to win a solo Nobel in economics, she got hundreds of invitations. She accepted three. One was advising WNBA players on a labor deal. She helped players land the biggest % raise in US sports history. www.wsj.com/economy/wnba...

What an effective way to highlight the importance of an individual organism. I could easily see a large panoramic piece showing the common ancestors to all species.

"I Contain Multitudes" This digitally painted piece honors coyote by tracing its lineage from the first cells of life to the animal trotting our cities and the wilderness today. The thread gives descriptions of all the extinct organisms shown in this piece (not to scale)

So empowering.

Modern transportation usually indicates flying. In older times it meant, socializing, rest stops, shared experiences of far places, and of course, greater travel times. Travel today seems to happen in our minds, aided of course, by this small device and what it connects to.

I bought “The Overstory” by Richard Powers on September 15th, 2021. I finished it today. Unlike any book I have ever read, it demanded to be read at the speed of trees. A bit here, a bit there, in deep ruminating cycles for four years. I have no idea why it happened this way. Transcendent.

This lovely poem, “Allowables”, is in the spirit of one of my favorite poems: The Fly by William Blake.

I return to this poem often, and have posted it around my neighborhood when the times call for it. Today is as good as any day to return to it.

Little Fly Thy summers play, My thoughtless hand Has brush'd away. Am not I A fly like thee? Or art not thou A man like me? For I dance And drink & sing: Till some blind hand Shall brush my wing.

Do vote. It is one simple thing you can do that has a definite effect.

The US political system isn't perfect but that won't stop me from participating in the process. A lot of people will be voting for the first time, but that can't happen unless you're registered, and depending on where you live, time is running out. vote.gov/register

The part of my brain that notices rhetoric thinks Harris is smart to emphasize fundamental freedoms; the policy-oriented part of my brain is glad to see her highlight gun violence prevention. And then there’s the part of my brain that just responded to this speech with an inarticulate sob of relief

Project 2025 would sabotage science-based policies that address climate change, the environment, abortion, health care access, technology and education. It would impose religious and conservative ideology on the federal civil service. Read Scientific American's analysis of its threats 🧪

Nightmare fuel. And I'm a climate scientist who works on disasters in insurance, so it takes a lot.
