When I'm not shooting projects for clients, there are few things I enjoy more than catching Mother Nature interacting with #Chicago. Lightning, snow, waves, ice, fog, shelf clouds — you name it, Chicago almost has all the weather // #WX #ILwx

This happened about 500' from my place. Can't remember ever seeing so many cops swarm down Halsted. The scene is not within direct eyesight, but I can see lights flashing and the 18th street exit from 90/94 is *still* closed. Something about federal agents being involved is something to watch.

One person was shot Monday evening in Pilsen during an incident involving federal agents, prompting a police investigation and road closures. Officials had not released the person’s condition or explained what led to the shooting.

Mine is waiting for me in my mail room!!

The colors at sunrise were *insane* this morning. The sky, the fall colors at Promontory Point, the lake...Sheesh! Sure picked a good morning to wake up early

Once again, I simply said this is what they were going to do because they've repeatedly and consistently said this is what they were going to do.

This is some Russian/ North Korea style bullsh*t happening right here in the US two weeks from a crucial election & on the day that opposition forces are rallying nationwide. No more media monopolies.

Full update from our team. We STILL do not have admin access to the account.

Last night's sunset was a dream. After a brief, gusty downpour, the rain cleared and this scene of crashing waves underneath a cotton-candy sky revealed itself for a fleeting moment.

(Reuters) - The order to limit a satellite system used by Ukraine for battlefield communications and drone operations came from inside the White House, according to two US officials and a Western official briefed on the matter. @reuters.com 🇺🇦 www.reuters.com/world/europe...

How many people are following bots and/or people that are resharing bot posts that they would notice "Russian bots have virtually dried" up? Or are bot farms posting about bot farms going offline?

This thing has made me go do a lot of reading tonight, and the Wikipedia page about the last public execution in the United States is well-written. It was Rainey Bethea, a Black man hanged in front of a crowd of 20,000 in 1936, a spectacle which embarrassed Kentucky enough that they ended hangings.

I think people should listen to what the administration trying to bring back spectacle lynchings, race riots, and middle passage-esque deportation voyages are trying to tell you about themselves. bsky.app/profile/bren...

Not sure if anyone cares, but it looks like work has restarted on Bally's Casino. I took these photos five days apart. And totally by chance, the difference between them is only 2 minutes - 6:32pm vs 6:34pm

Time flies. TEN YEARS ago to the day, 10/7/2016, I made my first visit to the Vista construction site. Deep foundation work had just begun and there wasn't much to see above ground but cranes, drilling equipment, and tons of rebar. Here's a look back at where the 1,191' tower would rise.

For non (or past) Chicagoans, those foundations allowed this tower to join the skyline. Though it broke ground in 2016. The structure wasn't complete until 2020 with the first residents moving in later that December. The hotel portion was complete and opened in 2023.

Chicago is a magnet that pulls in people from hundreds of miles around because those places failed to care for them. There are many causes but the result is real. When we say to shut the fuck up about Chicago (you don’t even live here!) this is what we mean. @harebrained.bsky.social

Holy shit.

Do I have a couple books I still need to read. Will buying more books make me read those first? There's one way to find out...

While the Gulf Coast NWS comms issue appears resolved, with the growing tropical risk was seeing way more social media traffic about the radar outages that occurred over the weekend. Feel compelled to share a thread as seeing a lot of misinformation. (1/)

What a shit take by Jim. Can you imagine having to subscribe to various private weather radar networks across the United States like they were steaming services? "Nope sorry, velocity scans are only available in the Radar+ package for KLOT"

EJD@firewxguy.bsky.social

I don't think privatization is the answer. Weather data such as this needs to be publicly available and free. The answer is this administration shouldn't have gutted NOAA's budget with the horrible DOGE cuts.

I 'joke' but do wonder how this would actually work in practice. Is the hope for one company to own all the radars/information (I'm sure one company wants that)? Do news networks/outlets then pay licensing fees to broadcast the data, etc? Are ALL Wx apps/sites then paywalled?

Or does a private own/maintain the radars, while the Federal government pays them to license all the data? We get to access to it like we always have while friends of the administration get rich doing the bare minimum.

So, since there is clearly a demand for it, other neighborhoods should also have fall festivals, so that this one will be less crowded. Speaking as someone who lives a literal stone's throw from this one.
