My complaint about #outlier is the various rare words that aren't recognized. Today it was AMBIPEDAL. What's wrong with that? Myself I'm mostly right-footed. The other day I was annoyed when I wasn't allowed CATADROMY, unfair! I say.

I was looking up words online and comparing definitions and came across a paper whose abstract has an amazing sentence. Which author wrote that?

I just discovered that Mark Helprin and Mark Halperin are not in fact the same person. After many years! With more research I learned I probably don't need to bother distinguishing them.

I know ranked choice voting is complicated enough already, but I'm wondering if anyone who studies/models RCV has considered including a "haters vote"? That is, you get one full +1 rcv that goes to the top of your list, and you also get -½ haters vote that's applied to one candidate, no ranking.

Feel like it might get people more enthusiastic about voting. On the one hand, you still have to rank Hapless Bumbler vs. Idiot Prettyface vs. Inept Stump ... but you can definitely vote against Scurvy McEvil.

But I would love to spend three days walking and riding through Frick and comprehending all the trail developments. And the park officially expanded! Have you made "improvements" to the slag heap?!? What?

Spending time in Pittsburgh has the feeling of like maybe spending time with an ex you broke up with ten years ago lots of great attractions where you think maybe this could have worked out but also frequent reminders of irreconcilable differences and you just have to say, well, I've moved on

Seattle city council's District 5 has been held by pro-business backed candidates for a long time. Debora Juarez has held this seat on-and-off for nearly a decade. Cathy Moore won the seat in 2024, but resigned 18 months later. There is a special election *right now* to fill the seat until 2028.

Not just on Aurora Ave, but at the site of Julie Kang’s former bank. You know, her bank she was likely forced to sell because of what the FDIC called “violations, reckless unsafe or unsound banking practices, and/or breaches of fiduciary duty.” Oh you didn’t know? 😄 I’ll have to do a thread soon

I reiterate that my Supreme Court Expansion plan is to simply switch to a distinctively American Cicada Brood System where we have overlapping panels or “broods” of justices spread over the country, numbered I to XXIII, emerging periodically and consisting of panels of 13, 17, 19, or 23 justices.

Reading almost anything these days, to the tune of Frere Jacques It's so stupid, it's so stupid Why so dumb Why is it so stupid Why is it so stupid All the time All the time

13 now. I don't know how you coach this. You have to play more innings until you finally can say, let's go get some sleep and get to tomorrow.

I was just now looking at some political text messages (US, democratic) and typed a reply. Block immediately is the sensible thing But I wonder, is there even a chance that a human reads my response? Anyone there? Worked in the political content mines? Do you see responses?

I'm not much for online connectivity, but I was in the local library last Thursday (as one does in lake city) and spotted a book that I thought I had read about on Twitter, The Mimicking of Known Successes. I checked it out.

What a delight. The author @older.bsky.social is on bsky now of course. Such a nice medley of hard sci-fi and romance and detective stories with all the background slowly laid out, revealed over the 150 pages. A third of the way in I thought, oh, this is a play on Sherlock Holmes. Maybe it is?

I'm an interdisciplinary science nerd so of course I have "objections!" along the way but the whole thing hangs together well. A nicely told story. I borrowed it from the library, so I'll need to go buy a copy. And "lend" it out to friends.

Household conversation, "look its 75 years for the republican party, they're racist, it explains almost everything","ok yes misogyny too it fits","the feeling of losing is reactionary that's how it goes"

We don't see these planes too much in north Seattle, but it would be better, in my opinion, if they transmitted all of the flight and plane info on the standard adsb channel. This is not a war zone/you're doing an outreach pr event.

I just had a sort of dinner snack: some leftover grilled salmon in between crusts of bread with cream cheese. And I thought: as much as I publicly hate The Seattle Dog, maybe I'll try one someday.

I had to unfollow a person on here who made hating mayonnaise part off their online personality. I think mayonnaise and all its variations are pretty good, so it was just disturbing. I also really strongly, very strongly prefer standard time. Have to think about my social media consumption.

"This was an insight that I too gained in illness, and it is part of what I tried to write about in Piranesi: that there is a whole world endlessly going on, endlessly being beautiful, regardless of whether anyone is there to see it or not." Very moving piece ♥️

Having now watched all of The Pitt, and basically enjoyed it, and watched and listened for all of the Pittsburgh neighborhood references, I also find that main character with his cute nickname "Dr Robby" to be an insufferable Mary Sue. What a jagoff.

She: No. No Steely Dan. Me: I'll just read you the lyrics She: No I said No. Do you want me to pull up some Dianne Keaton clips for you to look at? Me: no ok alright that's fair

George Bush killed my friend. I've been living with that fact for twenty-plus years. Yes. JC was on meds but he was fine and friendly and outgoing and kind. But with the recession he lost his job and with the general 00's attitude he lost his immigration status and healthcare

And of course I don't know the family situation there back "home" but I don't have any illusions about it. He's not with us now.

OK New York won. Big surprise there. The team with the interesting French guy lost. I don't get the bluesky bias, but I'll go back to ignoring basketball. #goms
