Read this fantastic @scholarlykitchen.bsky.social post by @jacoates.bsky.social! I think superimposing Richard Poynder's thoughts about the OA movement with the preprint movement is superb 👌. #Preprint #PRC #OpenAccess #PeerReview #Publishing scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2026/04/14/g...
Thomas and Denis are great people, deeply passionate about the diamond OA community and the work they do! #Librarians - do attend the call & I'm sure you'll have a great time! :) @peercommunityin.bsky.social #OpenScience #DiamondOA #OpenAccess

Great to see that cOAlition S is going to enhance its "focus on sustainable and equitable models, such as PRC, diamond open access and preprints". This aligns with some of the work we are doing at @cwts.nl and in @rorinstitute.bsky.social.

(1/2) For the 2nd question, I feel we need an entirely different assignment type like "Reviewed Preprint" or "Assessed Preprint" (for reviewed preprints with editorial assessment)! @ludowaltman.bsky.social @andre-brasil.bsky.social @rorinstitute.bsky.social @crossref.bsky.social @elife.bsky.social
We need good practices for DOI registration for publish-review-curate platforms like @metaror.bsky.social and others. @andre-brasil.bsky.social and I wrote a blog post about this: doi.org/10.64000/76j... Together with @crossref.bsky.social we hope to receive input from the community on this issue!
(2/2) Formalizing "Reviewed Preprints" as a category will have important implications for the P-R-C model & to meaningfully take forward the work undertaken by preprint reviewing platforms like @reviewcommons.org @prereview.bsky.social @peercommunityin.bsky.social @elife.bsky.social, etc.! #PRC
@ludowaltman.bsky.social @andre-brasil.bsky.social & @crossref.bsky.social are requesting input on #DOI registration for P-R-C model!

Speaks for the impact that @biorxivpreprint.bsky.social & @medrxivpreprint.bsky.social have come to have on the field! And the exemplary work led by @richardsever.bsky.social @johninglis.bsky.social - both very much deserving of The Royal Society Research Culture Award 2025!
This is interesting - it'll make institutions take more (almost complete) responsibility for integrity issues but they may also want to invest significant money (& possibly human resource) to make these checks available for everyone!
We'll probably also see orgs like HHMI push things like data checks upstream, in-house (many institutions, including CSHL, require faculty to run plagiarism and image checks before submitting papers). I'm a bit conflicted about this because of COIs, some bad acts better exposed publicly, etc. 2/n
Very much befitting - many congratulations @richardsever.bsky.social & @johninglis.bsky.social! 👏👏👏
Very honored to receive the Royal Society Research Culture Award - this represents the work of a great team who've worked non-stop since we launched bioRxiv in 2013 royalsociety.org/news/2025/08... www.cshl.edu/inglis-and-s...

I am deeply concerned about the research integrity issues we are seeing right now. Including around preprints, but also science more broadly. But I am equally concerned that our fears about misinformation will lead us toward an even more closed, exclusionary science system.

Again, concerns about research integrity and openness go beyond preprints. We saw this in our study of journalists and their use/perceptions of predatory journals, which participants associated with #openaccess: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... [Still a preprint, but accepted at Journalism Practice]
"LLMs are being used in problematic ways with preprints. But they are also clearly being misused within peer review itself"! 💯 #LLM #Preprints #PeerReview
If you have ever published in a journal, you know that peer review does not always deliver on the promise of "quality control" so many of us continue to expect of it. Yes, LLM's are being used in problematic ways with preprints. But they are also clearly being misused within peer review itself.

(1/2) @maddipow.bsky.social draws an interesting comparison here regarding #PeerReview. I think this could really benefit bad reviews but probably not rogue reviews - the latter consisting of bias, rudeness & deliberate mishandling! One thing it underscores - Peer review training is essential!
I can never understand why efforts to improve peer review don’t learn from the decades of educational research about how to do good, robust, constructive assessment and feedback. What would happen if we treated peer review as pedagogy? New in @wonkhe.bsky.social wonkhe.com/blogs/peer-r...
(2/2) And "consensus calibration" does remind me of @elife.bsky.social's "consultative peer review" process where peer reviewers & editors consult with each other before the reviews are passed on to the authors! #PeerReview

And by heated convos I am referring to the fact that when we launched Gates Open Research almost a decade ago researchers thought that preprinting and open peer review was wild. Now perceptions have really shifted. Authors that embraced a new model have made it much easier for others to follow
So well put by (shall I say, the one & only? 😄) @richardsever.bsky.social! #Preprints #PeerReview #ScientificPublishing
So caveat emptor is something everyone should bear in mind for preprints...but probably also journals. What preprints do do is be very clear about this, and they offer the opportunity to create a better, decoupled system without the current flaws 3/n journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...

We @asapbio.bsky.social are planning some work on evaluating the community friendliness of preprint servers. Which factors matter to you, the community? For me = strong governance, transparent policies, good metadata, non-profit stewards, open licensing.
Recently we submitted a ms to a Springer journal; they recommended their preprint platform Research Square. It looks quite nice, and you can also see where your paper is in the review process. Not sure how new this is so curious what people think about this? www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-6...
