Steelport Land Severance Ontario Land Tribunal Vice-Chair Tee Fung Ng has granted Party Status to Bea Bhardwaj, Nick Tsergas, Dan Shannon, who have incorporated the Canadian Civic Infrastructure Alliance. #yhmcc This means the Steelport land severance will be a contested hearing ccia-aicc.org

Before becoming captivated by a certain tech-governance issue I wrote stuff. This piece is making the rounds again and it's worth resurfacing now. 1/3

Kids have been in school for a month, mine home sick all week. It's the latest round of covid, for which neither they nor me have an updated vaccination for. Nor does my wife, who works in a hospital. Not high-risk enough apparently. So now we must once again raw-dog the novel pathogen. 2/3

It's unacceptable that six years in we are still doing this. Evidence strongly supports a summer rollout, not a vaccine campaign after everyone has already been infected. We do not approach other viruses this way and there are very good reasons why. 3/3

One more reason not to want a giant data center next door to your house (and while so far this is limited to a war zone, wait until competing AIs start drone-sniping each other to gain a few milliseconds of advantage during a bot-war).

Ukraine struck Russia's Yandex data center in Sasovo, Ryazan—destroying it completely—in a retaliatory move after Russia targeted Ukrainian data centers weeks prior.

Praying away the climate-collapse

NEW: October 17 marks a global event called “Origin,” focused on Earth regeneration. Rather than a movement to directly influence climate policy or polluting companies, Origin promises change through synchronized prayer and body movement. Behind it? A fossil fuel heiress and an anti-vaccine doctor

Last week Sask. Premier Scott Moe announced the contentious 300MW AI datacentre going up outside of Regina is actually going to be 1,200MW. In #HamOnt, newly-obtained documents show Slate Asset Management has been planning for 800MW of datacentre capacity "at full scale."

patatas@its.small.patatas.ca

Hamilton's Mayor and several councillors deny that Slate Asset Management wants to build hyperscale datacentres. Meanwhile, documents show Slate briefed the feds on their 800MW plans. My latest: blundervalley.ca/blog/slate-8... #HamOnt @mayorandreahorwath.bsky.social

This is what we've warned municipal councils about across the country. A developer can say they're building one thing, but legislatively there is nothing to stop them from building a very different thing. That's the whole banana. Thank you once again @its.small.patatas.ca for reporting this.

The accounting is in: In Oregon there are 111 data centers. The TOTAL number of people employed at data centers is just 2,630, or 0.1% of the labor force. Those 100 data centers consumer 23% of all electricity used in Oregon. Meanwhile, electricity rates skyrocket as more centers are built.

Hopefully by now, PM Carney realizes by placing our digital policies & regs on the negotiating table, he sacrificed our sovereignty & culture. Locking Canada into a “permanent state of subordination”. And that it will never be placed back on the table. www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...

No AI datacentre proposed in your town? Good. That's the best time to get organized. Before it lands. Whatever you’d do if one shows up tomorrow, do that now. stopthedatacentre.ca Thank you Charlie Angus/@meidascanada.ca for the conversation

Another government agrees that rules are needed for AI datacentres — a new type of facility which did not exist in Canada five years ago.. And that government releases a set of voluntary principals signed off on by Big Tech.

one of my favourite pieces of Canadian tech regulation trivia is that Palantir signed the feds' non-binding "commitment to support the Government of Canada's effort in leading the way on ethical AI" Lockheed-Martin is listed as "not yet" a signatory. For shame! www.canada.ca/en/governmen...

In reality, Canada still faces the Sidewalk Labs problem, since US tech is embedded in all parts of government and society, from Microsoft office products to governments’ continued insistence on using X to make announcements. Unlike Europe, they”re doing nothing to change this. From Jan:

theconversation.comMicrosoft’s AI deal promises Canada digital sovereignty, but is that a pledge it can keep?As the U.S. government becomes increasingly authoritarian and issues threats to other countries, can Canadians trust U.S. tech companies with their data?

All this Ring of Fire stuff is not new.

This whole thing scares the shit out of me—and the media coverage I’ve seen appears to neglect these basic facts. WaPo straight up ran with the headline, “Former Fauci aide admits hiding emails to thwart pandemic inquiry.” That’s…not what happened? It’s unreal.

July was ICE’s busiest month yet in the Puget Sound region. It’s a stealthy surge, without the helicopters or smoke grenades of Chicago and MN. But the surge is real, with real people taken every day. Each red pin is someone’s family member, neighbor, coworker, loved one.

This map tracks the proposals we actually care about and has a Community Reporting mechanism modeled after Erin Brockovich's map of US projects. Includes Treaty boundaries. Happy mappin'

The datacentre debate is spreading across Canada. Are you a city councillor wondering what you can do to protect your community. Or maybe a very cool person who wants to stop one or more datacentres?

This is absolutely going to have an effect on AI search results and bot-summaries. Looking closely at how the page is constructed, that seems to be the point.

MAHA-aligned research is entering the training data of AI models that millions of people (and increasingly governments) rely on.
