Americans will never, ever appreciate how badly they fucked up by denying this woman another 4 years of running the FTC. We literally could have been making things materially more affordable right now. But no, they/them or whatever

Lina Khan on Mamdani: "One thing we saw the mayor be very attentive to is all sorts of daily nickel and diming -- taking on junk fees, subscription traps. Those can seem very micro and targeted, but in the aggregate I see those as really designed to take on unfair methods of competition."

CA voters: YES on 40 NO on 41 NO on 42 All the billionaires are spending lots of money to convince us otherwise. You can't blame them, they have a billion dollars. That's the problem.

In 1962, our founder, Fujimatsu Moriguchi, took Uwajimaya to the Seattle World's Fair, introducing Japanese food, goods, and culture to a broader Seattle audience. It was a pivotal moment in Uwajimaya's history and helped shape the future of our family-owned business. 💙 #Uwajimaya98

Reissue of the year, thanks to @darkentries.bsky.social Unreal, wildly beautiful, elevating music from Suzanne Ciani, who pitch shifted her voice in the late 70s & says “my natural voice became reinvented as what was clearly a gay man,” who she named Steve steve-ciani.bandcamp.com/album/out-of...

This has been the correct position for 24 fucking years. We need to dismantle every single power consolidation of the Bush era. Trump is able to do what he does now because Obama did jack shit about any of it. Kill all of it with fire: Patriot Act, AUMF, warrantless wiretapping, Guantanamo & DHS.

On Sunday I completed my mad dash up the West Coast by showing up to Sunday Dharma Service at the Temple that my grandma used to attend decades ago. I couldn't believe how welcoming the sangha was to sending me the msg that they didn't know me, but they knew who I was. I even stayed after for taiko.

There was quite a reaction to mentioning my grandma. When service ended, a man w/access to the temple archives pulled me aside into a side office, ran a 5min search & procured a card with the declaration of her homyo (Buddhist name) on one side, and her eitaikyo death notice from 2001 on the other.

A lady gathered many of the Temple's yearbooks in pursuit of finding Sumiko. No dice in the '54 or '76 editions, but success for '93. I also found my grandparents' names on the donor list at the dedication of Wisteria Park across the street. I'm picking up things that were sitting there all along.

Dying laughing at this shit. The way he actually scared the shit out of them lmaooooooooo

This quote by Neal Ascherson about the relationship between fascism and nostalgia / "heritage" that I heard when learning more about the anti-fascist ideological underpinnings of the band Test Dept's work the other day gave me chills. Bro is cooking. buff.ly/VQ9tZIT

My transition from "Buddhism-curious" to "culturally Jodo Shinshu" to "actively saying the nembutsu daily" has been swift. It feels uncannily serendipitous that the temple I have lived 4 blocks away from for 9 years is the same sect my grandma used to practice & the ministry is based and inclusive.

Remember everyone, if we all get our ballots in early we don’t need to spend two weeks in a state of constant anxiety in November!

I legitimately do not understand how the fuck anyone voting on a California election ballot could ever be expected to fill one out realtime in-person. You would have to have done SO MUCH research in advance. Mine is 10 pages this time and they're all similarly this long. Good grief. Good problem tho

Savage LA quote from Morrow Mayo, 1933. Taken from Mike Davis' "City of Quartz" which I'm reading at last. It's taking me down a rabbit hole of socialist Angeleno muckracking; e.g. I had no idea Upton Sinclair was of this same milieu. Davis' "Marxo-pessimism" is a mega-bummer, but it's so real.

Highly recommended buy. Worth so much more than just paying this dude's dental bill (which is of course worth it). It's mesmerizing. This one made a bigger impression on me than Autechre Guitar.

A fall offering. SHANE PARISH — DENTAL WORK Bandcamp exclusive. Electric guitar/looper. Made to help cover unforeseen medical expenses; became a little follow-up to Autechre Guitar. RIYL: E2-E4, Robert Fripp, Francis Bebey, Plastikman. shaneparish.bandcamp.com/album/dental...

Imagine how much less GPTese & slop art we'd have if Americans were actually taught anything material related to Marxism, like, at all. Lately I'm just so depressed by the spiritual depravity that has dominated our modern world. They want you to never know anything other than alienation ever again.

Finally saw Author & Punisher live after like 15 years of idolizing the dude. Great show in a packed little club in East Hollywood. A reminder that I really did just have this dude all over my mind when I built the Rail Bow in 2013.

Had a great time hanging out at the 2026 #VJCC #RAP #ArtsAndCrafts fair this weekend. We bought so much stuff that was really high-quality. Ceramic sake cups, postcards, a yukata, a local lefty history photobook, a little bag, a candle, on and on. Really good stuff on offer.

One necessary #urbanist Angeleno skill that I've had to focus on this year is finding the narrow strip of shadow cast by a traffic light or electrical pole to stand inside of while I wait for the crossing sign to turn. That like 2-3 degree difference is huge when this place is turning into Florida.

Sooooo rad seeing DJ Shadow perform his 30th anniversary arrangements of "Endtroducing" front-to-back at the Novo in downtown LA last night. He has apparently never had the occasion / basic stems & samples available to properly tour this record until now. What a treat.

On this day in 1988 & 1991, Talk Talk released their fourth (“Spirit of Eden”) and fifth and final (“Laughing Stock”) studio albums. Amazing records. Amazing band.

I’ve been OBSESSED with this record for a few years now. It’s really unique and expansive. Fantastic album.

As Falls Wichita... Recorded the same year as Offramp, it goes hand in hand with the latter. Great playing and chemistry w/ Lyle Mays (his contribution is pretty remarkable). Gorgeous atmospheres (esp. on the 20+ mins. side-long title track). There's a Bille Evans homage (September 15th). Lovely LP.

I got to the part of “Strawberry Days” by David Neiwert where the ferry accident that nearly wiped out the entire Suda family is mentioned. This is almost right: it was in 1928, and my great aunt Bernadette went to the Convent while my grandpa George was raised elsewhere.

Never listened to this one until like 5 years ago but now it comes on probably once a month.

Giving this one a spin tonight: The KLF's 1990 Chill Out. Nowadays this would cost 100s of bucks on vinyl but I was lucky enough to go to Manchester in the '90s and buy it at a fraction of that price. Last night, I talked about The Orb's debut. This is another seminal ambient house LP. True classic.
