🎞 What can we learn from the viral tiptoeing AI-generated #Rumpelstiltskin? So many things, including not to let our #NewsLiteracy guard down just because footage looks "old" & "grainy." While many claimed the creepy clip shows actor Billy Barty in the 1987 film, that's not the case.
1/ "When tweens & teens are trusted to produce real journalism, they begin to understand their role in contributing thoughtfully to their community." Great piece from Sireesha Rutter, an educator at Jupiter Middle School in Florida who presented at #NewsLitCon
2/ Adds Rutter: "I want my students to be informed, engaged citizens when they leave this class. I want them to use their #journalism skills to research issues, seek out nuance & make informed decisions. I want them to think for themselves about what’s important to them and why." #NewsLiteracy
😨 Every election (& Halloween) season, the same falsehoods circulate. What's scary is that the more people are exposed to something, the more likely they'll believe it's true. BUT ... You can get out ahead of recycled misinformation by learning to spot the common ways it spreads. Treat yourself ⤵️

❌ NO: This is not a legit video of the #Eiffel Tower collapsing in flames. It's AI-generated. 🤔 Pausing for a few seconds to ask "Really??" is a good first step to fact-check a viral claim. 🔎 Then examine the source - is it reputable? And seek out supporting evidence. 🔗 go.newslit.org/EiffelAI
