Paris Hilton’s financial privilege lets her turn her Neurodivergence into a celebrated asset. However, for many ADHDers, the same traits are met with financial penalties, limited access to care, and a constant struggle to simply get by.

We are more likely to be underemployed or unemployed, more likely to find ourselves in poverty, and less likely to have even our most basic needs met. That’s the difference having access to wealth can make (not just for Neurodivergent people, but for all of us).

The superpower language some ADHDers and other Neurodivergent people use often overlooks the systemic barriers that can compound the challenges of ADHD for those without wealth.

In these instances, the core difference is not the “severity“ of our ADHD, but the shock absorber of wealth.

Meanwhile, less privileged ADHDers who are struggling to get their most basic needs met often won’t see things that way. For ADHDers and other Neurodivergent people who are struggling financially, our experience may be defined by unmet needs, financial strain, long waits, and a lack of support.

For someone struggling to afford rent or facing discrimination at work, framing ADHD as a “superpower“ is not just unrelatable, but can feel dismissive of our very real struggles.

While Paris shares the same neurotype as many of us, her easy access to resources lets her experience a fundamentally different reality. Her wealth and status have allowed her to manage her differences in ways that are unimaginable for many ADHDers.

Hilton’s career as an entrepreneur and media personality allows her to structure her life around her ADHD traits. She describes ADHD as her “superpower” that drove her success, a perspective that is much more possible when you have the resources to turn differences into advantages.
