Subtweeting yesterday’s AI discourse, I wrote about Breiman’s Two Cultures paper and what we want from our forecasting models.

BTW this means no funding for GSS, ANES, or PSID. GSS 2026 is in the field now, but then it looks like that's it. Devastating for social science.
NEW: In March the White House released an FY27 budget request that zeroed out the National Science Foundation's directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE). For months it was unclear what would happen. Now, with FY26 over, the damage to SBE is coming to light. My reporting:

wikipedia has been ANNIHILATED with AI bot traffic for a while now (because LLMs can't get enough of it) which puts a huge burden on its tech and server costs. and now it looks like bots are making unauthorized edits to pages and trying to hack community tools diff.wikimedia.org/2026/10/05/o...

I've felt uncomfortable watching the spate of trophy hunting we've seen over the past year, and I think Terence Tao's reflections are encouraging-- mathematics solely via changelog is not really desirable mathstodon.xyz/@tao/1172078...

This is a good way of putting something that's irritated me: "I liken the AI-native attitude to someone who goes into the MoMA, looks at a Jackson Pollock, declares that they, too, can generate this thing that looks like a finger painting." eytanadar.medium.com/ai-native-ph...

I think this is fundamentally wrong but in an interesting way I will need to write about sometime. The key is a) consumers do not choose what is produced, or how, they choose between what is produced. This is a crucial difference
I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.

SoftBank’s investor presentation is one of the greatest things ever made. I’ve been thinking about it all day. These are the real slides shown in a speech where Masayoshi Son said he wouldn’t retire for at least another decade. The goose stuff is truly demented. Bravo group.softbank/media/Projec...
