We resent universities as proof that a touch‘o’socialism is good actually so we blame them for all of capitalism’s externalities.

Brendan Cantwell@cantb.bsky.social

I am consistently vexed by the fact that elite consensus is more interested in holding US colleges and universities accountable for things that they have a little control over - white color wages, rent in Santa Barbara - than things they can influence - campus safety, instructional approach.

2, but that’s because I know a literal puppeteer at Netflix that worked on one of his shows. Score another point for Baudrillard I guess

To flip some discourse script for a bit: what’s y’all’s Obama number (ie degrees of separation with the former president)? Mine is 3

Bragging to my relatives that I could identify all the pictures with a stop light when logging on to my favorite website

By this reasoning it would be fine for me to accept papers written by a student’s parent or roommate so long as I was reasonably confident that the student had dictated the prompt and checked the work. Seriously, whose facility with argument or structure would I be assessing in that scenario?

Opinion: If AI is now part of academic writing, what should institutions actually evaluate? This essay argues that analytical writing should be judged by evidence, structure, argument, and accountability not by guesses about how each sentence was produced. https://chroni.cl/4eDRdjg

I’m sorry to have to be the bad guy here but we need to recognize that we live in a compressed air thrusters world now. If you’re not finding ways to teach the critical use of compressed air thrusters in your classroom, you’re setting your students up to fail when you could be setting them up to fly

I’m married but I have a Bachelor’s degree so I guess I can call myself a bachelor

Zacharia: "A lot of the misinformation, miscommunication is around the fact that I labeled myself a lawyer. I consulted for a long time many people in the field -- 'Is it ok if I label myself a lawyer?' -- and they said, 'Absolutely. You can call yourself a lawyer. You have a JD'"

This is true, but I genuinely believe that most mainstream comics would be better if they were loosely penciled at at a 2 page a day clip and inked twice as fast

Matthew Dow Smith@matthewdowsmith.bsky.social

For the love of Kirby please do not listen to anyone who says you should be doing two finished pages of comic book art a day. It is a recipe for burnout, misery, and eventually, the destruction of your career. Industry standard is one a day, five a week. Period. Got it?

i especially love all the dopes saying “when the internet first went mainstream everyone hated it too” like it happened in the pioneer days so no one can dispute it, like mf’ers we were THERE

One thing I miss about smoking? The loitering. My friends and I could really loiter when we smoked. Once we got a ticket!

This explains a lot. When discussing AI agents with other faculty it’s the folks teaching in fields tasked with producing bureaucratic subjects (Business, Education) that have been the first to bring AI into their classrooms.

Tressie McMillan Cottom@tressiemcphd.bsky.social

Anyway, neoliberalism or whatever term you like really hit bureaucracies hard and now there isn’t anything to build the kind of perfect bureaucratic subject for whom agents might be useful or interesting.

The US higher education system is not equipped to correct for the effects of systemic injustice and underfunding at the high school, middle school, and elementary school levels.

A lot of people seem to think that reason, intelligence, and consciousness are widely agreed upon terms for well understood phenomena. Either that or they’re just sloppy thinkers.

This is a great read!

You can compare the addictive properties of social media to cigarettes, but I’ve never enjoyed using social media as much as I enjoyed smoking cigarettes

Occasional reminder that pedagogy should be eccentric and calibrated to the uniquely bizarre access you have managed to cobble together in order to crack open a complicated form of understanding.

Sometimes the semiotic square articulates a relation of concepts that are synthesized in things; sometimes it articulates a relation among things that resolve as concepts. How can it be both? Because the semiotic square is a cootie catcher

It's not hard to understand why appeals to the "center" (which just means the right wing) come at the cost of votes on the left. This seems baffling to many of the "political strategy" minds on here whose apparent plan is to have their cake and eat it

Telling students they can use AI sometimes and for certain things makes as much sense as telling students in a health class that unprotected sex is fine so long as it’s “just the tip”

Whatever, never mind

Tressie McMillan Cottom@tressiemcphd.bsky.social

Algorithms killed the spectrum of emotional valences. Everything now is set to 10. Bring back the eyeroll, the exasperated sigh, the hand wave, the shoulder shrug. Some stuff is just mildly annoying or blandly dumb. You don’t need to blow every emotional outburst on the mundane.

Weird, it's almost like these "prediction markets" are just the random bets of inveterate gamblers who are reacting to breaking news without any actual insight or skill

stephen fowler@stphnfwlr.com

So to recap, the WI Gov Dem primary prediction markets: A) failed to capture the closeness of the final result B) failed to capture movement towards the winner C) saw wild swings related to topline vote changes instead of the bigger picture trajectory election analysts could see

She’s running, so I’m trying to get used to these discursive moves. But it’s a bracing reminder of just how retrograde our current political moment is

This post is unavailable.

When I lived in Pittsburgh (circa 2010) the mayor drove around town while a news crew filmed him complaining about the potholes. It seemed weird at the time, but it presaged the next decade of the Democratic Party’s approach to politics

Zach Weinersmith@zachweinersmith.bsky.social

Without wanting to talk political views at all, it's astonishing nobody (as far as I know) did Mamdani's approach to media. Like, just doing short video where he appears at a pothole and says "we're fixing the pothole." Maybe it's just one of those media things that's only obvious in retrospect.

There are probably worse candidates for a compact edition, but given the original dimensions and lettering of 200AD (not even going to get into the problem of downsizing the art) I’m hard pressed to think of any
