Good evening from Two Rivers, Alaska, and amateur radio shack of KL2R. Moonrise was at around 5:15 PM local time. Here about 8 PM. It was frosty this morning under clear skies. 9F/-13C but ended with 20F/-7C. Warmer, slippery days ahead.

Shout out to Kristijonas Adomaitis and the team for what appears to be a powerful bit of kit for SDR enthusiasts. I am running 3.0 on my Raspberry Pi 4B and waiting for a METEOR-M pass. on-air.dev I’ll explore further. FYI Satdump has run its course for me. Constant crashes on Win+Linux. I’m done.

METEOR-M N2-3 processing in real time. I am monitoring via Pi connect, which is a little slow. I see already OnAir is slow to lock on 72 Kbps because it’s searching for both 80/72k. Maybe there’s a setting I can change. 80k isn’t used right now.

Found the setting. I’m flying blind right now without reading the docs. I usually do that as a test. UIs should be fairly intuitive for basic stuff.

What the actual fuck what? We have commercial passenger and cargo flights in the wee hours. Military, medevac and law enforcement flights 24/7.

Amateur radio station TO4A in Martinique appears to be overdriving his transmitter today on 10m FT8. Those are ugly artifacts.

Good evening from Two Rivers, Alaska. The fine snow falling since early morning has accumulated to the tune of 2”. We’re halfway through an uncertain snow event. Meanwhile, I made shrimp and grits. Omg.

We are planning to use the call during CQ WW SSB from KL7SB. This will take 10, 15, 20, 40, 80, and 160 from 0Z 10/24 to 23:59z 10/25. The WARC Bands, as well as digital and CW, will still be available. I won’t be operating in CQWW, but I’ll probably take advantage of WARC bands in CW or digital.

I worked W1AW/KL7 on 20m CW about an hour ago. The transmitter is about 400 miles south of here, and they were legit 599. Unusual to have 20m so strong on a short jump. Insane pileup. No split. The trick was to call late as the other signals died down. Good luck, all.

Remember this when voting. Extremists can’t govern, nor do they want to, particularly during crises. They don’t have the tools in their kit, because their model is only about dominance and violence against those who do not conform. 1/

We all know controlling people, and they act out when they’re faced with a situation they actually can’t control. Authoritarians have three basic qualities or needs: Unquestioning obedience, violence, and adherence to (what they believe are) the “traditional values” of their ancestors. 2/

None of these things are consistent with governing an evolving, enlightened, heterogeneous society. Rather than building, their only desire is to burn everything down. You hand them a full gas can and a box of matches with each vote. 3/end

Meta vs #NoKings. They blamed automation. A human should have been monitoring. Many risks to disruption, and if Meta was committed to an open society…In any event, it probably proves FB code is designed to stifle widespread movements.

The High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) will be conducting a research campaign October 20-24 UTC, with operating times specified in the table below. Operating frequencies will vary, but all HAARP transmissions will be between 2.8 and 10 MHz. All information is subject to change.

I got to thinking about Nigeria this evening. I discovered the country’s population is well north of 240M. I remember it was 200M years ago. There are approximately 15,000 licensed amateur radio operators in Nigeria. This number is relatively small compared to the over three million worldwide.

This is a first for me in 28+ years. Glad I have a generator and several days of gas. We’ve been without power in subzero for days, but not on account of generating capacity limits. GVEA offers no details. Only advises to prepare and don’t be surprised. I was last in Kosovo ‘99 when this happened.

Sixteen years ago I snapped this photo of a bear track next to my size 13 boot. This was at my work site near Fox, Alaska.

Listening to air-air chatter this morning between two bush pilots. One was recounting his experience at the Pedo Rally in Wasilla yesterday. He parked a little before 9 AM. He returned to his car after 7 PM. I wouldn’t wait in line that long to see Yahweh. I would to vote, though! Fight fight fight!

I pulled my 200 mW WSPR beacon off air to do some antenna maintenance about a week ago. The previous random wire antenna broke in a winter storm, so I’ve used a Comet CHA-250B vertical for the past year. Some would call it a dummy load on a stick. Not great at low bands but it works at low height.

The installation of the vertical was rushed in the snow. The base is about 4 ft above ground. Manual says 20-30 ft best. Nevertheless, I swept the Comet today with RigExpert. VSWR < 2:1 on 80m, < 1.8:1 on 60m and 40m, and < 1.5:1 on 30-6m. I think I’ll repurpose it for low power backup and SWL.

Kind of a cool crop from METEOR-M N2-4 at 0453Z Sunday. Received with Nooelec SDR, Wraase KX147 turnstile, Satdump 1.2.2 on a Raspberry Pi 4B. Processed as AVHRR 3a21 False color

Let’s see what RS44 pass at 2255-2313Z nets me on FT4…14 degrees elevation, so there have to be some fish in the water.

Well shit! Nothing. I did hear LA0FA again, though. I saw several FT4 signals scattered about. However, I had considerable difficulty decoding. It’s possible current ionospheric conditions are causing too much flutter.

Fun to work into Michigan on an FT4 QSO with WA8EBM at 2345Z. Nothing heard over Europe. Score another one. Good signals from the usual suspects from east to west coast and in between.

Satellite RS95S (QMR-KWT2) FM repeater is on. 145.920 (67 Hz PL) up 436.950 down. I worked Don VE6HQ in Red Deer, Alberta, with a fine signal at 17 degrees elevation. 1950Z.

XYL KL1BE is laid up with a bum leg downstairs. Until she’s able to walk upstairs easily, we’ll stay in touch with iPhone texting and the Quanshengs. The battery life on these little radios is amazing! Programmed with egzumer 0.22 firmware. IYKYK.

I was happy to work Tammarra KD2YIB in Binghamton, NY (FN22) on an 11-degree pass of satellite RS44 this afternoon! The pass covered entire US into northern and Central Europe. Sadly, I was unable to work Matthias LA0FA in Norway (JO59). I decoded just one FT4 CQ from him. He was quite loud. 😢
