Pretty certain that hundreds of years from now the broad takeaway from this era will be that the sudden invention of a vast and unregulated information and communication network was so overwhelming that it caused everyone to completely lose their minds.

Hey! My wife @alicemeichi.li painted a beautiful cover for the new Nemesis series from Titan comics (it's the gorgeous blue one). Nearly 20 years together and she still manages to dazzle me with her talents.

I keep seeing things about how the primary indicator of a person using AI for art is if their style changes significantly in a brief period of time. I'm just going to throw it out there that there are plenty of other completely valid reasons for why this can sometimes happen.

I have a weird fear that if I ever complete and release this project, if the work is in any way impressive to people or strikes them as beyond my capabilites, then it may just look like I resorted to using AI to make it. I didn't, wouldn't and won't.

Sometimes you learn a new thing, sometimes you experiment with a new medium, sometimes you get a new piece of software or you get really inspired by something new. Experimentation is why many of my favourite artists have reinvented themselves over and over again.

Right now I'm sitting on a small stack of mostly un-shared comics I've been developing, none of which particularly look like 'my work'. The main purpose of this project has been to push myself, learn to work in different styles and figure out what I really want my future work to look like.

Before that in my gallery work, I was doing a lot of painterly portraits, generally realistic head shots. This started in around 2017. I was deliberately trying to break away from the very flat, very comic-booky style I'd been working in for years. It was because I was bored.

I taught myself how to draw and paint and I'm still always learning. In 2019 I went from being able to blag drawing backgrounds with a rudimentary understanding of perspective to being able to draw entire cities in scale. What changed was that I read a book called 'Perspective for Comic Artists'.

You know who would never support somebody accused of what Neil Gaiman has been accused of? Neil Gaiman (until half a year ago). Back when we all thought he was probably a fundamentally decent guy, that's at least partly because he wasn't telling us to give Harvey Weinstein the benefit of the doubt.

Someone I am ashamed to know made the argument that he would keep defending his hero Neil Gaiman because 'If I ever become a famous writer, this could happen to me.' There's a reaction suspended somewhere between narcissism, unhealthy levels of hero worship and maybe a closet full of skeletons.

I worked at Midtown Comics in 2008 when I first heard rumours that Gaiman was abusing his position to have sex with female fans. It always seemed sort of likely, but I never knew for sure (It's not like with Warren Ellis where I actually knew some of the women).

When I was 19, I met my now wife in Piccadilly Circus. I brought her a copy of Neverwhere that I fumbled and accidentally threw at her. We kept it, obviously. His comics are full of art by some of my favourite working artists, who didn't mean to co-sign his shitty behaviour by taking those jobs.

Here's something a lot of people don't know: artists spend a lot more time working on comics than writers. I don't want to toss out something that J. H. Williams or Glenn Fabry worked hard on, just because Neil Gaiman is disgusting. And yet, owning it all makes me so damn uncomfortable.

Now I own a lot of things I'll never enjoy reading again and it's hard to know what to do with all of it. On the one hand, I never want to see his face, hear his voice, or read his words again, but on the other, as objects, these things have personal relevance.

At 21 a friend of mine died. He was 19 and like a little brother to me. My boss at the time was a great guy named Nicky, he tried to make me feel better by giving me a Sandman statue. I brought it to America and still display it. Nicky died since then. It's a sentimental object that's now tainted.

It's not the only time I ever heard that, but there's only so much stock you can put in rumours like that when you don't have a name or a face or any real details in front of you. Even though I've been a fan of his work for most of my life, I long suspected something like this could come out.

Frankly I've believed it all since the Tortoise Media podcast broke the story. I know people don't trust them and obviously I know why, but I personally didn't regard it as the hit job people made it out to be. The claims, the consistency and the evidence they presented seemed undeniable.
