"When we've fought the battle bravely and are beaten to the wall, tis the sneers of men, not conscience, that makes cowards of us all" - The Shame of Going Back, Lawson

"See the army of the rebels Marching in for evermore We are countless as the pebbles That are strewn along the shore. Agitating, agitating, Till the Truth has sealed the fate Of the wrongs that I am hating with the grand old hate" - Lawson, The Labour Agitator

Back then you could launch a whole brand new comic and your lineup on the cover could be "Native American Person With Belt, Glowy Shadow, Asian Girl: Powers TBR, Flying Poutface and A Dog." You didn't even need one of the Spider-Mans. You could just do that. They'd let you.

Continuing the #snes theme, trying #secretofmana. This is a weird action/rpg mix. Feels like Square Enix trying Zelda? Also - it's two players? #rpg

Finished #snes #shadowrun! I had not appreciated how much the atmosphere did heavy lifting in this game. Still fun though. And the soundtrack is still excellent. It ends with a teaser for Shadowrun II. Sad. I did try to buy this game in he 90s, but could not find it anywhere

"All men hate the wretched; how, then, must I be hated, who am miserable beyond all living things" Am re-reading (listening to) Frankenstein. The above line caught me.

I listened to this audiobook of #TimWinton #TheRiders. It's from the early 90s. Imagine my surprise to learn that filming for a film version, starring Brad Pitt and produced by Ridley Scott, has just commenced. But central to the book is that the protagonist, who will be played by Pitt, is ugly.

With a writing career spanning more than half a century, John Wagner is quite rightly regarded as one of the all-time greats of comics! This week he joins Mike Molcher for the start of an expansive three-part interview about his incredible life in comics ▶️ https://bit.ly/4qiV1K5

"Look, the U.S. has not got a perfect record. There’s no doubt about that, and it has betrayed its values many times, but this is of a different order. This is just a blatant throwing-the-whole-thing-out and making a claim to be able to use force whenever it wants." - @oonahathaway.bsky.social

@peterbrent.bsky.social You know, what I'm not looking forward to is when Hastie replaces Ley, says "we're all very right wing now" (probably with something veiled about climate change being fake), then gets a bump in the polls from ditching Ley. Which will be trumpeted as "See? Moderates suck"

“If we want to have an honest conversation about who we are and how we got here, we’d do well to look beyond the perspectives of prime ministers preoccupied more with their personal legacies than the consequences of centuries of dispossession,” writes Grace Tame. satpa.pe/vlRVI5n

satpa.peTony Abbott’s warped story of AustraliaTony Abbott’s history of Australia is a version that sanitises the worst effects of colonialism and immigration policy, and leans into the destructive doctrine of Trump.

My 6yo announced he wants 10,000 babies. I asked if he really liked babies. He said no, he just wants an army to rule the world. He is now proceeding to describe the battles fought by his baby army on his behalf.

It's a sad state of affairs when the strongest rebuke of Trunk* that I've seen for a while was in a Netflix version of the Twits. *autocorrect did this, and I'm not fixing it

The most important thing in writing is to finish. A finished thing can be fixed. A finished thing can be published. A finished thing can be made into a movie. An unfinished thing is just a dream. And dreams fade if you don't hold on tight enough. So finish the thing.

Which means that everyone who DOES like it (and there are many, and many among them now make and make media about movies themselves) has been trying to recapture the *LOVE* they remember about it for 40+ years, like trying to fall back asleep into the same dream.
