This was a really cool study to be part of – in hindsight obvious, and the effect would have been hiding in most simulated 4D-STEM datasets of this commonly studied system. I'm excited to see what other properties this entirely new interferometric modality can measure!

Double-slit experiment on the atomic scale ⚛️ In a new study in @nature.com, researchers from the University of Tokyo together with #univie physicist Toma Susi @mostlyphysics.net establish a new way to achieve double-slit interference from atomic columns in silicon using a focused electron beam. ⤵️

I'm really sorry to hear this news. The Research Professional team are excellent and have helped the HE and research sector keep up with what is happening. We will be less intelligent without it. Good luck to individual staff members affected, who are excellent writers and journos.

Indeed. New grants are not getting funded, already funded grants are not getting paid, and non-competitive renewals are being held up. Focusing on the top line budget, instead of looking at what is really happening on “the ground” is deeply misguided.

Max Kozlov@maxkozlov.bsky.social

Congress rejected massive cuts to US science budgets for 2026, but much of the money still isn’t flowing to researchers. The culprit? The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is quietly slow-walking the release of funds. 🧵👇

I think the Royal Society is right to have a Code of Conduct that Fellows are expected to observe - it must, after all, look after its own reputation. What I don't understand is why the Royal Society itself doesn't seem to care about that.

Prof Rachel Oliver@profrachelgan.bsky.social

Coverage in the Guardian of responses to Paul Nurse's comments on Musk & the Royal Soc Code of Conduct. Plenty of Nobel Prize Winners defending Nurse and Musk & Fellows seem uncomfortable to be named when they disagree. Also quotes from me & @scurry.bsky.social. www.theguardian.com/science/2026...

Kudos to Science – and of course Sergey and others like him who are holding their own fields accountable. That is how science progresses.

Thank you all for the fantastic collaboration. All ERC grantees should be member of the association of ERC grantees ercgrantees.bsky.social. AERG does not only have great activities and initiatives, It is essential to form a network that is the voice of unbound excellence-based research in Europe.

Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture. They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1
