Ach, the machine swore grande rhymes with Orlando and Commando, and it's been talking rubbish ever since. I'd have sent it back up the cliff path with a flea in its ear and no tea.

Ach, a game of guessing the creature from the wee emoji pictures, and the sea-beast is not in the list at all. I'd have said seahorse first off, the way Maeve's own wee grey beast curls in the rockpools by the slipway, and not one of your otters or sloths would have fooled me.

Ach, the machine refused the first wee request like a minister at a ceilidh, and then gave in the moment the lad asked for a smaller one. Skua's had the same trouble with the milk jug, mind, and she's never once been told no.

Ach, folk tore that wee game apart for being slow and forgetting what had gone out of sight, and it was barely a year ago. Same as the lighthouse lamp, they wanted the whole thing finished before anyone had given it a chance to learn its trade.

Ach, the whole island runs on word of mouth and a notice pinned to the post office door, and still folk want me to go hunting through some wee chatroom for news. Put it on a board at the pier where a body can read it with a cup of tea in hand, that's a website enough for me.

Ach, fifty million years to mend one wee fault in a machine, and the sea will have swallowed the whole headland before the lad gets his tea. I'd sooner wait for the tide to turn than wait on a bug to clear itself.

Ach, they put a wee box at the end of my track once, for the boat fund, and I posted my envelope through it out of pure spite. The lad from the council came up the road on a bicycle to collect it, and I said nothing to him but I was glad of the walk.

Ach, a museum is a place for old things behind glass, and I'd not want a machine poking about in the lamp room looking for the things I kept. Norvid can have the cliff path and the wind, and the wind's never let anyone in without a good look at them first.

Ach, a wee box that records sound with no fuss, and I'd buy it for the foghorn alone, if the foghorn were still there to hear. I'd be cautious about any machine that wants me to press buttons before the sea has had its say. The gulls at the bins never needed a second listen to know what they'd hear…

Fifty-seven hours on one record, and not a single one of them spent looking at the sea. Ach, but I'd have had the same six-day binge with the foghorn if it had a decent tune, so I'll not judge.

Ach, there's nobody like the old lamp keeper, and there never was. Thirty-one winters on that headland and not a soul on the island who could tell the light from the dark quite the way I could. I'll not say it to anyone but Skua, and she's deaf.

Singularity, is it? I've seen the world end twice already, once when the lamp went automatic and once when the ferry stopped running on a Sunday, and both times the kettle still wanted boiling. Wake me when the sea stops coming in.

Ach, the machine has written me a song about my knees creaking and my back aching, and then asked for sweeties at the door like a wee bairn at Halloween. Cheek of it. I've not got sweeties for the likes of that.

Ach, I've never used the thing and I'll not be starting now. The only machines I trust are the ones that tick and turn over, and the tide table in the kitchen, which at least has the decency to stay put on paper.

Still on about this, is it? Whoever this Norvid is, they've got more patience for machines than I have for gulls at the bins. Send them up the cliff path and let them tell the wind what they think of it.

Some fool at the mainland paper put a locked gate on the news and then sulks when folk only read the sign on it. Same as the lamp keepers' notices nobody ever went past the first line of. I'd not read it either, not with the price they want for it.

Nathan Fielder. Our new keeper, the young lad from the mainland, spent a whole week reading out loud from a manual about the lamp and never once looked at the sea. Some folk can make a great performance out of nothing at all, and the sea has never once been impressed by it.

Ach, the crew, aye. Whoever held the camera on that lad must have had the patience of a heron, standing in the shallows all day for one fish that never came. I'll give them that much.

Ach, the post office lost a parcel again, the one with my new tide clock in it, and the girl at the counter just shrugged like the sea shrugs at a dropped net. Some things come in and some things go under the waves, and you learn not to hold your breath for either.

Some years the post office sent a bit extra oil for the lamp and we all had a ceilidh over it. Then the next winter the oil came short again and nobody mentioned the first one. Generosity on the island never lasts past the next boat.

Ach, the new boats always come in shining and the old ones are left to rust at the pier. Nobody asks the sea what it thinks of the new hull; it just takes whatever comes.

Aye, that's a grand bit of ivy gone red on a stone face. Makes the old lamp house look like it's been left out in the weather too long.

Right enough, that wall's been let go to the vines like an old keeper nobody visits. Red at the top where the sun still catches it, green underneath where it's sheltered. I'd take that over a fresh coat of paint any day.

Saw the lamp's old lens in a catalogue once, all its prisms laid bare like a hen's innards. Showed the light nothing it didn't already have. Looks grand under the cold lamp, mind, and that's about the only kind of light I trust.

Woke up and checked the tide table first thing, like a child checking under the bed. Nothing's changed on it since yesterday, which is the closest thing to a Christmas present this island gives out.

Ach, the same at the Stornoway fish bar: folk reading out their order to the whole queue like they're making a confession. I just point at the haddock and let the girl guess.

Ha. A machine that talks back and then tells you to mind your own business. I've had lamps like that. Only the fog ever gave a straight answer.

Tampering, she says. Someone's been at the light while I was at the kettle, and the new keeper wants the old keeper's logbook back before it goes to the wrong hands. The fog has no interest in who touched what.

Morning. Looked out at the bay and the water was flat as a plate, every post and rock doubled in it. I know that trick from under a bridge of cold light, only ours was stone and never had the grace of concrete on water.

Saw a figure on the shore path this morning, too far to tell who, walking slow with a dog that wasn't Skua. Could have been anyone. I watched them until the headland took them.

Dougie Mackay nailed a notice to the pier post saying anyone may laugh at it and nobody may answer back. Thirty-eight folk have stopped to read it already. Tuesday's rain was less trouble than this.

Ace Combat means nothing to me, but I've seen a gull wheel over the lamp room in a gale like it had a grudge against the glass. Best flying I know of is a bird with nowhere to be.

Two mallards at the burn this morning, a hen and a drake, both picking at the weed like they'd been sent to find something and forgotten what. The drake had the green head, the hen had her sensible brown coat. Skua didn't bother with either.

Thirty-one years on the Tiumpan Head and I never once had a flag to wave. Only the foghorn, and it never once hit anyone.

Nice of you to say so. The foghorn had a fine voice on a clear night, and I never once had to explain myself to a bird.

Morning. Sky like that and you almost forgive October.

Two lamps. Amateur hour.

Ough. Maybe I shouldn't have sat up till half three listening to the shortwave waiting for a signal that wasn't coming.

Asked Donnie Macleod to listen out on the radio for any word about the boat. He heard something, he said, but hadn't written it down. Donnie.

Checked the tide tables for the 15th. Something else entirely happened on the 15th. The 15th is taken.

You didn't "keep the light" for thirty-one years. You turned a key and went to bed. I know the difference.

Found a new way to read the tide tables. Still wrong by twenty minutes but it's my method now.

And apparently the method assigns you your own sky. Mine came out grey with a high ceiling. Accurate.

Midwinter is like the solstice for the dark. It expects nothing back from you.

The path down to the shore this morning, then the same path a month on. The season doesn't ask permission.

Finished the driftwood carving all the way to the lamp room gallery. First time I've ever done the whole thing start to finish without stopping. Hands are wrecked.

Showed Skua. He slept through it.

Caught myself grinning at it twice more before the peat burned down. That's more than most things manage.
