Russia, Myanmar, Iran, and North Korea are using mines, and there is growing evidence of use by Ukraine. 5 European states have withdrawn from the Treaty, and some plan to restart production. Meanwhile, falling funding leaves civilians, many of them children, paying the price.

Just a week after the ICBL appealed to intervene urgently to prevent renewed production of antipersonnel mines by Finland and Poland, Colonel Riku Mikkonen of the Finnish Army Command confirmed yesterday that his country is on track to acquire one million antipersonnel mines.

Just a week after the ICBL appealed to intervene urgently to prevent renewed production of antipersonnel mines by Finland and Poland, Colonel Riku Mikkonen of the Finnish Army Command confirmed yesterday that his country is on track to acquire one million antipersonnel mines.

The appeal was sent to senior United Nations officials, heads of humanitarian organizations, and foreign ministers. The ICBL strongly condemns Finland’s plans, which threaten to reverse decades of humanitarian progress and undermine the global norm against these indiscriminate weapons.

ICBL has written to senior United Nations officials, heads of humanitarian organizations, and foreign ministers, urging them to intervene as Poland and Finland move towards renewed production and potential use of antipersonnel mines following their withdrawal from the Mine Ban Treaty.

Landmines are being used in active conflicts. A norm that has protected millions for nearly 30 years is under threat.

According to the Landmine Monitor Report 2025, 9 in 10 recorded landmine casualties are civilians. Almost half are children. Let these figures sink in. States using, producing, or considering the deployment of landmines should take note of this documented reality. #MineFreeWorld #MineFreeEurope
