None of this would have been possible without everyone leaping into action on the project. We paired up as duos, creating hexes tied together in surprising ways. I can't thank everyone enough, from writing hexes, the introduction, and everyone frantically contributing magical gourds in a d66 table.

This hexcrawl only exists because of the creativity of everyone working together. Check it out, and let us know if you venture into this autumnal lands. 🫡 🎃 🍂

This hexcrawl is a surreal journey through a perpetual, autumnal twilight. Giant turkeys, magical pumpkins, warring witches, and even more await those willing to explore.

All the hexes contain some kind of situation or challenge to engage the characters. They're designed with the intention of being handled without violence. The wanderers of this place are normal people, not hardened adventurers.

I have to admit a something shameful. The first time I ever encountered it, I just typed /roll 1d66 into roll20. 😔

How do you write a fighter class that's interesting? How do you take standard fantasy and make it fresh? How do you frame campaign setting details without giving reading homework? How do you set up a long-term campaign from session 0? Here's my pitch: riseupcomus.blogspot.com/2026/09/knig...

This is such an interesting post about something I've felt a bit in my own prep. Too much signposting creates the same sort of table habits that too much railroading does. Good read, since we don't typically talk about this 'mirror' of railroading!

Signposting was what I named the underlying tension that drove me to the N/OSR. After months of wrestling with it, I think I've nailed down what it is, why GMs rely on it, and how it goes wrong. This post was months in the making; come check it out! atmosphericunderworld.com/signposting-...

With a new baby and toddler, The Odyssey (2026) may be the last movie I'll see for a while, but I was still able to glean (or couldn't avoid gleaning) a few lessons from it for TTRPGs #osr #ttrpg

prismaticwasteland.comWhat The Odyssey (2026) Can Teach Us About Running TTRPGs — Prismatic WastelandEvery movie has lessons for running your game if you are sufficiently TTRPG-brain-poisoned, but Nolan’s The Odyssey (2026) has more than usual.

One fun inventory management thing I used once: before heading out to the dungeon, pay the upkeep fee on gear to equip it. Doesn't matter if you end up not using it, just putting on the armor or bringing the rope required the upkeep! To make it easy, it was just 1/10 of the cost of the thing.

A side effect of this was that it covered well for not worrying about encumbrance for the most part! Sure, you CAN bring every piece of gear you own like that one Wayne Reynolds cover character, but the cost of doing that starts piling up!

It was a really good way to make players who typically just outfitted with the Perfect Set of gear to start thinking what they'd actually need and USE on the excursion.

I had to have a regular coke instead of coke zero today and yeah, it still tastes like literal mold to me? Not an exaggeration, it's not terrible or anything, but it genuinely has a moldy taste! (I'm so brave for this one)

I issue you a challenge: Write your dungeons in 4-5 room elemental building blocks. Try writing a dungeon patch every week for a month. Post your dungeon patches on your blog so your friends can use them. Take dungeon patches from your friend's blogs. Make your megadungeons like a quilt.

If you like dungeons, you REALLY gotta get in on this. Castle Automatic is amazing, but for me the big draw of pre-ordering is the Big Map. It's so detailed and evocative it just BEGS to be explored. Plopping that bad boy on the table is like injecting NOS right into your Dungeon Crawling Engine.

Random darkvision thought: you see in black and white, but anything more than 5 feet away is incredibly blurry: you're basically Velma without her glasses.

The GM can still give you info but it's cryptic: "you can see a big shape, bigger than you, moving and shifting at the end of the hall." (Maybe a monster, maybe a group of rival adventurers, maybe a tapestry blowing in the dungeon wind)

NEW BLOG POST!!! A distillation of my deeply held beliefs on elfgame design, evolved from my previous posts on setting design which suffer from early onset linkrot, and confusingly enough ending with me talking about Deathbringer for 2 paragraphs? But not really. Gaze upon my works, ye mortals.
