The 90s dream was a translucent purple phone and a lime green inflatable chair. And a candle you bought at the Natural Wonder store that smelled like sandalwood and you weren’t allowed to light it.

Plus we could get cheap beaded curtains and inflatable furniture for our rooms to make them look like a version of the 60s with more tech and an updated color palette. Cheap decor marketed to teens, which would be on-trend, became much more available in the 90s.

I consult with stakeholders as part of my job, and sometimes emotions run pretty high, but that does not at all prepare me for negotiating with a sleep deprived 2nd grader.

i think it's really funny that in the 20th century people freaked out about conspiracies and hidden satanic messages and in-plain sight illuminati rituals but today everyone in charge of the world is screaming "I AM EVIL INCARNATE" and no one gives a shit

University food service needs to realize that 1) sandwiches should need to be eaten with forks, 2) if it doesn’t have cheese in it, or at the very least a cheese substitute, you can’t call it a quesadilla, 3) you don’t have to put rice in absolutely everything

When I was like 14 I had a week long gig as a Vacation Bible School assistant. At the church that we, I cannot emphasize enough, Did Not Attend. My mom made me do it. And basically I sat in the hallway and let a little girl talk to me about all her problems at home. None of the adults I told cared.

Well, once my mom asked when the aliens were coming to pick me up.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: This sounds like a joke question, but it isn’t. If it doesn’t apply to you, fine. But it’s a serious question with different levels of meaning. And I am genuinely curious. When did you first realize you were weird?

Got my roller coaster pants on (IYKYK), gonna try a weekend in October because I’m insane

Admitting liking amusement parks in certain online spaces (Reddit, Bluesky) sometimes feels like admitting that you have a drug problem. Anyway we took the kid to Six Flags today and the crowd was very manageable.

Genuinely one of my main career tricks is the old under-promise and over-deliver, and I REALLY hate it when other people’s fuckery gets in the way of that for me.

I’m realistic with clients about what can be done in a given timeframe and I’m like actually incapable of bullshitting, and luckily some people are still into that.

Hey guess what we avoided it in August but now it’s going around the school classroom how are we not past this in second grade Health anxiety activated

Oh boy my kid’s friend who was over here on Sunday just came down with Hand, Foot and Mouth disease so I’m frantically googling what the chances of asymptomatic transmission are

I don’t think about this incident a whole lot, but I do wonder if it’s part of why we’ve been very straightforward about death with my kid since very young. The other reason of course being the “cemeteries are part of my job” thing.

I once babysat some kids (3 of them ages like 4-8) and their CAT DIED (old age) the night I was there. The dad came home and put the cat in a bag outside and then returned to event. The 4 year old kept asking me when kitty would come back. I was like 13.

Someone needs to tell these losers about hobbies

I think one reason it’s good to have a liberal arts education in the classic sense is that you don’t then spend time trying to invent the concept of “intellectual pursuits” from first principles

Decorated for Halloween and now my kid is spinning around the living room singing “I’m a demon, yeah yeah yeah.”#parentoftheyear

Anyway this is what I was vagueposting about yesterday. If you’re not in the industry it’s hard to understand the scale, but that’s maybe HALF of the jobs in the industry just POOF not to mention the projects they’re just… abandoning?

Unionizing American Archaeology@unionizearch.bsky.social

Yesterday one of the largest CRM employers in the country, Chronicle Heritage, announced that they are dissolving the company and immediately fired and recalled all of their deployed field crews with no notice or severance. Private equity is a disease 🏺🪏

Also a good reminder that the economy becomes insane if one cannot believe that contracts will be honored

There’s a lot of wild stuff happening but let me tell you, WILD developments in the cultural resources management space today. Wild.

My kid is quite the comedian because he’s very much aware that he gets away with more if it’s legitimately funny

I would have so much trouble being a parent because i'd be like "well what do you want me to do, that's hilarious".

Actually, I’m not really a fan of interviews at all, unless the point is to show that you actually understand the things you’re claiming to understand on your CV/resume, which is rarely the point.

CT-9902@mindorese.bsky.social

Iced coffee interview discourse is fascinating. Because what is a job interview for? Probably depends on employer/industry. Are they checking to see if you’re a good fit with the workplace culture, or are they checking to see if you know when to be your most polished, conservative self.

*walks into job site* “Hi, I’m the archaeologist.” “Yeah we can tell.” (I mean surely I might also be mistaken for an environmental engineer or the wetlands person)

CT-9902@mindorese.bsky.social

I don’t know I’m just an archaeologist and everyone expects us to be weird

This gatekeeping question is inevitable: "Does the project involve any work that could be interpreted as scientific research?"

"OK so hear me out, the AI industry is controlled by a conspiracy of people who all talk to each other and worship a time-travelling evil AI god called Roko's basilisk. They are trying to be the first to destroy the world so they get to control how it happens."

This is part of the point, I think. This, Project 2025, Epstein, whatever. There’s actual tinfoil hat shit happening, so they invented stupid tinfoil hat conspiracies as cover, so you can’t talk about any of it without sounding crazy.

Andrew: weird and loud@ak0.bsky.social

The sweaty luridness this shit feels like it's protecting the ai apocalypse freaks. I can't say "seriously AI's not gonna kill all people. The humans that believe this shit are all way to into a harry potter fanfic" or explain roko's basilisk without my family being concerned I'm not taking my meds

The dumbest thing about the whole Ed Sheeran thing is he identifies as a "culturally Irish" musician, and is seemingly touring with half of Ireland, and yet somehow had no clue that Irish musicians have been the single longest and loudest chorus of voices in Europe about what is happening.
