for real though, is there a law that chinese tech companies have to have absolutely terrible websites? i'm embarrassed that it took me like 30 seconds today to fingerprint insta360 based on their website

Mikey Phantasm@mikeyp.net

Maybe I'm grumpy, but the latest trend of web stores is genuinely awful. Every company has a website and a separate store. Neither will have specs you need or good product photos, but both will be inundated with large marketing lifestyle videos that don't even show the product

Tried to make a joke about using ResEdit and discovered that in the year of our lord twenty-twenty-six the iPhone will correctly capitalize ResEdit

You know the more I think about it, "Tommy" probably wasn't even really using the right word with 'disavow' which is usually used in terms of responsibilities, so no, obviously AES isn't responsible for the existence of a political party in Egypt.

maturity is seeing this and not getting mad, but realizing that this could apply to anyone you see on the news

John O’Donnell@jodami.bsky.social

Maybe the BBC should get someone who actually knows what he is talking about then.

We really need a name for this phenomena where journalist play dumb and pretend that personal responsibility just doesn't exist see also: the estranged parent articles @michaelhobbes.bsky.social has been sharing, *exact* same theme

Ryan Fonseca@ryan-fonseca.bsky.social

It's a choice (a bad one) to tell readers this driver "passed too close to cyclists" when there's video evidence showing he drove his car into them, made contact and hurt someone. Fellow journalists: we can explore the nuances of punishment for drivers without obfuscating their dangerous behavior.

the only good thing the RAND corporation ever made

[youtube voice intensifies] Obviously the xkcd cartoon is a joke, no one would pick random numbers like that ... or would they? * I reach out of frame and hold up a book * I have good, and I have bad news * cut to b roll of a camera panning across book pages *

Prior to this I would have said one of the worst framework vulnerabilities was the Rails deserialization attack, but this being a language level issue is wild. As a side note we're going to figure out real fast who had any kind of sane security model on their hosting and who didn't...

i remember early in my career wondering why most people missed out on building early internet companies but i look around now and i get it so many people fiddling around with "my custom agent setup" and so few using this miracle of a tool to actually do anything

Ugh saw someone quote post the opencode guy and now all his skeets are getting pushed to me and I don’t need all these bad takes

Also ya'll need to get of my lawn. That fake hot wheels picture that was going around was so incredibly wrong they forgot that the bottom of the cars used to be METAL. Matchbox too.

Fun fact about the American healthcare system: most places you can hire a midwife out of pocket for a birth and still spend less than a hospital birth with full insurance coverage. When I was comparing plans at a job years ago their estimate for the best covered plan was like $7-9k out of pocket

OOOh Ray Delahanty droppped a new CityNerd about Philadelphia on Nebula. Secretly hoping he eviscerates Philly as I've really come to hate that city over the years.

hang out I have a few underconstruction.gif I might need to contribute

Why isn't there a Woody Guthrie style "This car funds fascism" sticker that we can plaster on Teslas in parking lots??

this is like hitler launching a symposium for jews how could the organization that systemically covered up and enabled someone like savile for decades be trusted with anything like that??

Is there a scraped alternative to TV tropes without ads? I don't care about ethics at this point, you can't access tv tropes with ads disabled, and the ads are so intense the site is unusable with them enabled (browser froze)

I grew up with the christian ideal of "watch what media you consume, like you would watch what you eat." I.e. don't eat garbage - don't consume garbage media. That's like the first thing that pops into my brain when people try to justify using Twitter/X: you can't make me eat garbage, get lost.

Genuinely can't imagine showing the whole world my own ass by getting up and shouting "I DON'T KNOW WHAT WOMEN LIKE" from the rooftops with your own name, and being proud of it

speedometer : speedo :: pedometer : pedo ?? I can't be the only one that has this stuck in my head

Mikey Phantasm@mikeyp.net

Petition to switch the US to the British pronunciation (and spelling) of paedophile, which just sounds so much more disgusting than US 'pedo' which always makes me think of pedometers.

Hey #song and #music people, what are some good examples of songs that mimic automotive journeys, but musically? So far I've got - Beep Beep, The Playmates - Autobahn, Kraftwerk - Red Barchetta, Rush

I’ll never forget the time some guy wrote me to tell me our website broke with his ad blocker. The culprit? Our advanced search page loaded an advanced_search.(js|css) and his proxy blocked all scripts and files that matched /^ad.*$/ 🤦🏼‍♂️

jared@awarm.space

apparently leaflet was being hit by adblockers because we use the classname pubContent which is in french adblock lists as it's short for publicite ? it really is a jungle out here man

It took like 4 emails back and forth to find out which blocker and rule he was using and he was still insistent that we fix our site that was broken not his homemade proxy. We declined to change anything and never heard from that guy again.

Ironically, I would check with Jewish scholars on this. Isn't something like this common for Passover where one 'rents' a shelf in their pantry to a non-Jew and they put all their yeast/bread there so that it's not in 'their' possession during Passover?

adonis (and cait)@cait.bsky.social

well officer, my bin labeled "NOT MY DRUGS" has you asking a lot of questions already answered by the bin

This is a terrible idea. Lojack already exists for this business model and is very commonly used outside of cars on valuable equipment or theft concerns.

My face when people are shocked at the sex crimes on fancy college campuses. Where do you think these politicians and famous sex pests learn it from??

I'm sure there is a fun German compound noun for this (or at least there should be) cc @kenjennings.bsky.social

Is there a word for when you are annoyed with the relative difficulty of a Jeopardy clue? Was watching one of those "this week in final Jeopardy" videos, category was famous buildings, I got really excited only to be deeply disappointed that it was super obvious (Flatiron Building).

Gee Firefox, thanks for making my browser look all weird and shit for no apparent reason. Glad to see that software developers are focusing on the important bits like random gradients on UI interfaces. I'm getting too old for this shit.

Playing around with the idea of making my own aluminum, machined woodworking jigs by designing something in CAD, and sending it off to JLCCNC or SendCutSend or something. Not going to save any money over commercial designs, but it's more affordable than I thought it would be. #woodworking

I see folks posting new stuff for Rails, and I wanna be happy for them, but the chance of me using Rails in 2026 is slightly less than me taking up Fortran or COBOL.

Consider this my petition to rename *that* fucking guy as TFG if we want to stick with initials

So *that* guy gave a keynote at his own “Railsworld” conference about how he is abandoning Rails and also programming mkay

On one hand, having thirteen folds in a phone will be *somewhat* inconvenient, but think of how special you'll feel holding(folding?) it in front of others, realizing your immediate superiority, by spendmaxxing your phone

I would join any religion that has cheese as a sacrament soo fast

Zitilites@zitilites.bsky.social

I'm atheist, BUT if they would hand out slices out mature cheese at communion instead of those flattened packing peanuts and tell me that cheese was our lord and saviour? I might be like "yeah, that tracks".

Genuinely wonder if software is going through a "mass produced houses" phase. With the ease that new software can be built, we are abandoning and throwing away more software than ever before. When you know that what you're building won't last, how much care and attention do you put into it?

Just went to "back in my day" someone on em-dashes by saying, "I've known how to type an em-dash on a mac for..." and then I paused for some head math and came up with 30 years?!? Rude.
