Coming from a theater background it’s been totally bizarre to me how many writers of books don’t understand it’s a social business

art is a community, and part of being an artist is being a part of that community: go to openings. see the work of your peers. talk with people about their work and your work. participate. you might create work alone, but you and your art does not exist in a bubble.

toxic #design mythologies: when you love what you do it isn't work. eat, breathe, & sleep design 24 x 7 x 365. you can learn everything from youtube. critique should be brutal. hustle, hustle, hustle. you have to have side projects. you can sleep when you're dead. only big name studios matter. 1/2

toxic #design school mythologies: grades are all that matter. just do what the teacher tells you. every project should be a portfolio piece. non-major classes are a waste of time. visiting guest lectures are optional. history classes are useless. do it just like famous designer x did it. 2/2

i just want to reach out and thank adobe for making sure i don’t spend too much time at my desk working and staring at my computer — having their software crash my entire computer randomly forces me to get up and take a walk pretty often so I really super appreciate it. #art #design

summer is when i make most of my work, so this is a note to self: rule 1: real artists make art. rule 2: making makes ideas. rule 3: my job is to fuck around and find out.

student: i don't know what I'm supposed to do for this project. me: neither do i. student: ...? me: student: ...?? me: student: …??? me: student: but... but... but you’re the... me: welcome to art school. #art

1. it elevated me far, far, far past where i could have gotten on my own or via free stuff online. it gave me a motivated community of like-minded people. it gave me creative, intellectual, and social stimulation. it gave me a career. 2. it was worth 100x what i paid. it changed my life entirely.

Art School Discourse is happening again, so I wanna see something. 🎨 If you went to/graduated from an art school/art college/art major: 1. What was your most valuable takeaway(s) from your experience? 2. In hindsight, was it all worth it for those main takeaways?

students: if you had a tough semester, failed a class, had to pause enrollment, or are feeling bad about your college experience, just a reminder: it took me 16 years to get my BFA. there is absolutely no “correct” way to do this, there is only your way. just keep being who you are. #art #design
