☀️ It's a repeat of yesterday! And the day before.... and the day before. 😴 Settled conditions continue across the country today as a ridge of high pressure continues to dominate. 🌤️ Some areas see a layer of cloud this morning, but that’ll start to burn off as the sun gets cooking. 🔥🌞

The sun is working hard today! ☀️ As the sun shines on the clouds from above, it works at evaporating them by lifting the air temperature, while the dew point stays constant🌡️ Here we can see low cloud and fog disappearing from the North Island, and cloud thinning over the sea ☁️

Ata mārie Aotearoa! Here are the temperatures you woke up to this morning - then what to expect for today and tomorrow 🌞 It's a lot of sun sun sun with temperatures even reaching 26°C in some places 🥵 How warm is it going to be at your place? Head to www.metservice.com to find out

In order to be able to see clouds using satellite imagery at night, a special night microphysics imagery is used. The light green cloud indicates lower level cloud, whereas the red/black cloud indicates higher level cloud.

With the settled weather this week, we’ve been on the lookout for cool clouds. ☁️👀 Here’s a stunning 📸 of lenticular (aka mountain wave) clouds over Wellington Harbour. 💙 💬👇 Feel free to share your favourite cloud pics in the comments below. We're all cloud fans here, and theres nothing better than staring at satellite images of the clouds blanketing the country. But sometimes something stares back at you...

🌞 Feeling summery? You aren't the only one! ⛱️ 🌡️ Over the last few days lots of people have had their warmest day since autumn, with Lower Hutt in Wellington having its warmest day in over 6 months!

🙋‍♂️ Mōrena Aotearoa, it's a bit of a moody start to the day with lots of cloud around 🌥️ 🌞 Another day of mild temperatures to start off, but like yesterday we will see temperature rise rapidly, with 20+ degree maximums widespread across the country.

⛈️ It's been a relatively quiet start to spring for thunderstorms, but things pick up this weekend ⛈️ ⛈️ Saturday will see the chance of afternoon thunderstorms for the inland South Island, which then spread north on Sunday to affect the east coast from Gisborne down to Wairarapa and Marlborough.

🌞 The increasing power of the sun means spring is our most active season for afternoon thunderstorms. The stronger sun warms the land and causes air to rise. Under the right conditions that air accelerates high up, driving the formation of storm clouds called Cumulonimbus clouds or "CBs".

⚡ These CBs have chaotic air currents that allow bits of ice to smash into each other, causing static electricity to build up inside the storm until it gets unleashed in a bolt of lightning. 🤔 Want to learn more about these clouds? Check out our explainer here about.metservice.com/learning/cum...

🌤️ Kia ora Aotearoa, its a pretty mild morning for most of us 🌞 🌡️ Temperatures are pretty average, with nowhere feeling particularly cold or hot, but things will warm up this afternoon with highs reaching 20+°C across the country.

The weather remains mixed in places through the rest of today, with spots of rain across northeastern parts of the North Island and southern and western areas of the South Island 🌦️. Tomorrow sees patchy rain and drizzle in the east, while western regions will see fine spells 🌤️. metservice.com

Our cloud of the week winner is Lisa Hill 🎉. Lisa captured this very cool pic in Alexandra yesterday. 🫧The giant bubble-like shapes are called mammatus clouds. They might look a bit dramatic, but mammatus clouds can just appear in New Zealand when the weather is changing. 🌦️
