Range breaking news from the great technical analyst @hmeisler.bsky.social No, not like that 📈 like this 🧑‍🍳

Helene Meisler@hmeisler.bsky.social

If I knew how to search on BS I would but I don't so here's my oven/range update 1. The control panel of my range broke July 4th weekend. 2. Took a week to get the repair guy out. He said sorry they don't make the replacement part anymore (range is only 10 yrs old so wtf?) 1/5

Not sure how many people know that X now doesn't show the reply threads or profile pages to non-users. Combined with the practice providing the links later in the reply threads (please don't do this here it's useless), most academic paper threads on X is useless for non-X users.

One of the curiosities of my working life (magpie, stealing shiny things) has been the fact that astro people have consistently written the best resources in numerical methods.

Emily Hunt@emily.space

An absolutely fantastic textbook on statistics and machine learning by Prof. Yuan-Sen Ting came out this week - and it's free! #astromethods ☄️ I had a read and it's incredibly comprehensive and well-written - I expect this to become *the* foundation book on stats & ML basics in astro.

Top thread! Bottomless knowledge in a charming format. Strangely few likes, but that will go up once Xitter is finally down

Before the charm quark was discovered in bound states, it was predicted via indirect effects. An early success story of the electroweak model and QFT! Mary Gaillard and John Rosner, who both passed last week, contributed to calculating the charm quark mass 🧵1/11

Presidential budget is out. Here's NSF. Biggest cut, by amount, is $1 billion, or 66.8%, from MPS (Physics & Math directorate). nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/00-NSF...

Couple of committees of very, very strait-laced Norwegians in grey suits looking hard at this issue as we speak. If they do a “margin call” sell-it-all, and they absolutely could, you will feel the noise

If you're in this situation and you think you'd rather come to work with me in Waterloo, get in touch---we might be able to work something out!

New Substack post It's very personal: my story of a 20-year academic career, and the many challenges of theoretical and cross-disciplinary work As I put it in the subtitle: There is a lot of success and a lot of pain here, and no happy ending thomscottphillips.substack.com/p/happy-in-t...

thomscottphillips.substack.comHappy In TheoryThis is the short story of my long, 20 year search for a stable academic home. There is a lot of success and a lot of pain here, and no happy ending.

This is how we win

have to say that, selfishly, on a personal level, I think this is weirdly making me a better person; now got into the habit of persevering with eg quite tough books I would have given up on not too long ago, as actively making an effort currently feels like an act of resistance, somehow

RIP Professor Jayant Narlikar, a great Indian astrophysicist. His book on gauge theories and quantum cosmology, written with his prolific student Padmanabhan, was challenging and seminal for me as a young man. Always physics, never too much mathematics.

They think the people who write in Google Docs are the same as people who code, in which I frequently now get 10 lines of irrelevant nonsense suggested to me Absolute idiots 🤦‍♂️

Annalee Newitz@annaleen.bsky.social

The new Google AI functionality in Docs is total mind-ruining shit. Hit enter in docs, it takes over your cursor to offer to help you write. Every. Time. You. Hit. Enter. Do you know how annoying that is when you are writing something? It's someone interrupting you every minute. MAKE IT STOP.

For a while now, I’ve noted that every time I attend a talk by a physicist about dark matter, they show a single slide summarizing the astronomical data, then are off and running about whatever their favorite DM model is. 🧵

‘again’ 😂

I honestly don't think it's any deeper than "savings products are sold not bought", the hoariest of industry cliches. Americans invest more because people call them up on the telephone and persuade them to, in ways that would make the FCA start defecating on the floor again
