Second skeet, I’m gonna introduce myself for anybody that wants to know. I’m a passing mixed person. I was raised in white spaces, but I made a decision when I was young to hold onto my blackness. It took a while to figure it out, but I didn’t lean into it fully until George Floyd 1/4

For those who need; I know it might be a little late, but I just used some of these resources yesterday. #hurricaneisaias #FEMA #recovery #assistance

They thump Bibles and scream "Jesus saves"—but watch them turn their backs on the sick, the poor, the stranger at the border. Talarico nails it: If you claim to love Jesus, start loving your neighbor. Not just in words. In action. Hypocrites take note—this is the faith America needs.

David Rohde says that the major logistics problems for the Navy largely come from the fact that the Navy's chief resupply station in the Gulf of Oman was completely destroyed in an Iranian attack, and Hegseth decided to keep it secret, from the public, Congress and the White House.

US child vaccination rates have plunged since before the pandemic, with kindergarten classrooms in more than 70% of counties now lacking herd immunity against measles.

Today we are visiting family in a different state. 今日はべつのステートの家族に行きす。 Translator version: 本日は、別の州にいる家族を訪問しております。 #LearnJapanese

を of course marks the object of the sentence. 訪問して means to visit. It’s interesting the way that word is built. 訪 means to call on (I assume the way the British use it) or visit, and 問 means to question. It’s like going somewhere to have a conversation with someone. おります means I’m here.

So, putting it all together: Today, family in a different state, I’m here to converse with. Course this is not a literal translation, but an amalgamation of the spirit of what’s being said and literally translated concepts. I love this, man…

Ok, so formal announcement hello 🙅🏽‍♂️ 別 means different but it’s Kanji for べつ. 州 means state or province. That took me down a rabbit hole because I figured the word would be something more like けん or 県 (prefecture). I learned that 県 actually refers to a county rather than a state. に in of course.

いる means “There is.” Basically the います verb but a different conjugation, specifically the dictionary form. Presumably, if you’re not concluding the sentence, perhaps you would use the dictionary form rather than the ます form. Within context, we’re saying family (家族) that is in a different state.

Housekeeping notes: I missed yesterday; I think doing this every day might be a bit much to keep up with, but I’ll keep doing my best. Constructive feedback is always welcome but never expected. I’m not going to say that every time. I’m not sure if my casual tone in 日本語 is appropriate or not, but

I do not intend to be rude by being too casual. If I am offensive, please tell me so I can do better. This is just an opportunity for me to practice constructing thoughts in Japanese and not limiting myself to what’s on Duolingo. I’m sharing bits of myself; I don’t expect anything in return.

So, they’re still going with the formal business translation for today. 友人 means friend, which is good to know. A deeper dive shows that to be the formal translation. 友達 is the word I actually would have intended. 懲役 means imprisonment. 刑 means sentence so combined a sentence of imprisonment.

言い渡され means sentenced. It combines the kanji for to tell and transit/ferry/cross. That feels appropriate. Things are going to be different for a while. So final version: 今日、友達は五年の懲役刑を言い渡されました。

It’s a way of honoring my patients. That’s really cool. 診察 means medical appointment. The rest of the verb suffix いたしました essentially means I did it, which with 診察 means I medically examined them. This was a neat one today. I’m going to have to dig into this more.

本日 is the formal announcement way to say today. Translator overdid that I think; 今日 would have been better. Also, 致しました is the verb meaning to do. So that goes back to doing the medical exam.

Ok, not sure, what the translator is spitting out here. 本日 is another way to say today?! Not sure what the difference is there; I’ll have to look more into that. 名 seems to go along with the number to mark it as people (who were patients). 患者 means patient. Oh! 様 is a respectful word!

At first glance, I didn’t think the translator translation was good, but thinking about it, maybe it’s not as inaccurate as it seemed at first. My translation appears to convey the current act of swimming, where the translator version conveys coming action. Now I know a new use for 行きす

The main differences are making the river the object with を and switching the verb from 行く to 下りる. I still think 行きます is the better verb form; 下りる appears to be used for elevation changes. に appears to make the river the destination. Switching it to で might be better. I’m going by river.

I don’t know that any of those translations really convey that I’m taking a leisurely float/paddle down the river for the fun of it, with my family. I think the best translation is 「今日は家族と川で行きます。」Constructive feedback is never expected, but always welcome.

That just leaves 「準備」 pronounced 「じぅんび」 which means “Preparation.” So, I think the way to think that through “I want to start preparation for the weekend”… I think. That might catch the letter of what I’m trying to say, but I think an easier way to convey it might be 「週末ですよ!」

So 「週末」 means “weekend,” but not this weekend, so the 「こん」 part I wrote, probably is not necessary. 「を」 Marks “weekend” as the object of the sentence. 「できたいです」 means “I want to do it.” 「始める」Means “To start.” It’s the dictionary form of the verb 「はじめる」.
