Congratulations to NSF NCAR scientist Marika Holland for becoming a 2026 MacArthur Fellow, an award commonly known as the “genius grant.” Marika uses Earth system models to study polar regions, improving our understanding of sea ice predictability & polar climate variability. https://bit.ly/4xWSau7

As a researcher, I am trying to be more intentional about backing up files, data, and information in formats as close to raw text and images as possible. I want to be able to still access the information if a software company decides to no longer support the file formats or software I need anymore.

I'd like to do a series of posts this week to highlight CSDMS Data Components. Data Components are software that help connect data sources to numerical models. For more information on the idea behind Data Components and their implementation, see Gan et al. 2024: doi.org/10.5194/gmd-....

First, I'd like to highlight SoilGrids, written by Tian Gan. SoilGrids fetches global gridded soil information from the International Soil Reference and Information Centre (ISRIC). Learn more about the SoilGrids Data Component—and see examples of its use—at github.com/gantian127/s....

Registration is now open for the CSDMS 2025 Annual Meeting: "Exploring Earth’s Surface with Models, Data & AI". This year’s meeting is held at the University of Colorado Boulder from May 13–15. Registration and additional details, please visit: csdms.colorado.edu/wiki/Form:An... Hope you can join!

When I left home at 8a, it was 26 F and windy on Shanahan Ridge, but -1.5 F and nearly calm at the Foothills Lab, which is about 5 mi away and 400 ft lower in elevation.

A thoughtful scientist, luminescence wizard, ultrasupportive colleague, and someone who's made me laugh till I cry on numerous occasions—Harrison is so deserving of the prestigious PECASE award!

JGR: Earth Surface@jgrearthsurface.bsky.social

We are thrilled to share that Associate Editor Harrison Gray was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers!🎉 This is the highest honor bestowed by the US government on outstanding early career scientists. Congratulations, Dr. Gray!🥳 @agu.org #PECASE #AGUPubs

After a month of wrangling, I finally got an example model (written in Fortran, wrapped in Python through Cython, built with CMake and Meson, componentized in the CSDMS Python Modeling Tool, pymt) to build and run on Windows. I am so relieved!

The application window for ESPIn 2025 opens today!

The CSDMS RSEs (>99% Eric, <1% me) overhauled the documentation for the Basic Model Interface (BMI), improving navigation and modifying internals to make it easier to maintain over time. We've also given the docs a new home: bmi.csdms.io. Please visit and check out the changes!

And imo the CSDMS meeting is one of the best you can attend as a student. Both mini workshops and talks & small enough you can easily meet folks

Are you a grad student (or a recent graduate) that has written a model, or a component for a modeling system, or done something cool and modeling-adjacent as part of your research? If so, consider submitting your work for the 2025 Syvitski Student Modeler Award! csdms.colorado.edu/wiki/Student...
