To our dismay, the artist and author Marjane Satrapi has passed away. As she wrote, ordinary Americans and Iranians have more in common with each other than we do with either of our governments, which have far too much in common with each other. We honor her memory and oppose the war.

I just finished reading the first novel (or first 2 novels depending on the edition) in the Teito Monogatari series by HIroshi Aramata. Despite it never having been translated into English, it's very likely you've encountered its influence in some form.

And they spend whole chapters talking at length about, say, an 8th century envoy to Tang China, the founder of the Shugendo sect of esoteric buddhism, or obsessing over the minutia of urban planning.

I'm pretty sure I had to stop about ten times per chapter to look something up on wikipedia, I'm not sure I've ever learned so much from reading a fictional novel before.

Maybe in characters based on the iconic villain such as Street Fighter's M. Bison, or in basically any modern Japanese occult fiction (if it includes onmyoji, shikigami, feng shui or Abe no Seimei it's likely inspired by Teito Monogatari).

The basic plot is about an evil Onmyoji sorcerer called Kato Yasunori, trying to destroy Tokyo using Feng Shui in the early 1900s. But as the author is a major history and mythology nerd, most of the characters are actual historical authors, politicians and scientists.

I’m reading the 100 Girlfriends manga in Japanese and this page is just… I’m so curious about how the English translation handles this garbled insanity (and this character in general). For those who can’t read Japanese it’s a crazy mix of Japanese and “English”. Check the alt-text to get a taste.

You are up to date.
