Do you use captions? I could use your help! Dr. Kate Quane and I are investigating caption preferences in videos containing maths. Only requirement is 15+ years old, don't need to know any maths! Survey will take ~25 minutes and includes a video of me teaching you maths.

Bestest plushie from Taylor May accurately describing the state of the world right now 🙃
Latest 3blue1brown video is worth watching for those less tuned into the discourse of AI vs Maths: www.youtube.com/watc... I'm not expressing my opinions, as I'm obviously not the target audience. 1/2
Earlier this year I replaced a string on my cello, had a chat with the luthier and concluded that I definitely need a better cello. If you want an idea of the instrument-trying process, worth watching/listening to this 22m video:
Today's Cool Thing: Seeing @davidkbutler.bsky.social in action helping out a student with real analysis and realising he'd already figured out the higher-order thinking/discussion behind the sandwich classification task I've been annoying other people with 😁

This is a good post by Tammy Kolda that's helped clarify my perspective on "struggle" within maths: To struggle in maths is normal, and part of learning is working through it, but I don't think it should be glorified. tammykolda.substack.... 1/2

This! Also, learn how to use a microphone. Don’t point it in the other direction from your mouth or stand four feet away. Talk directly into it. Handhold it if necessary. It’s your friend, it’s not gonna bite you.
If you are at a conference use. the. microphone. It doesn't matter how loud you think you are, it doesn't matter if you are a speaker or audience member. You should try to accommodate people who are hard of hearing (otherwise you're excluding them!)
Advisory Group on Mathematics & AI just released a report: "Responsible Release of AI-Generated Mathematics": agmai.org/general-se... For onlookers+non-mathematicians, I think it's worth reading to get an idea of how maths as a discipline maintains standards for building knowledge. 1/2
Interesting for me to think about and apply this to (Aussie) maths academia as I know it.
The report from the AI + TCS Working Group held at the @simonsinstitute.bsky.social is out, including "twelve concrete near-term recommended actions." Currently reading it: while I have some reservations, but there is some good in it! Notably items 7, 8, and 11. simons.berkeley.edu/ai-tcs-worki...
I've been struggling to find the words for why this guest post /really/ irritates me. Yes, we need more mathematicians, I don't disagree with the reasons given. terrytao.wordpress.c... 1/2
Grant Sanderson's (3blue1brown) guest post on Terry Tao's blog pretty much affirms and expands on my opinion of what's missing in maths academia: more maths communication overall, and especially towards different audiences.
It's been tough to figure out my thoughts + nuance, so I'm happy to see others express it. So far in my AI experimentation I'm restricting myself to free+local models and it really does help shave time off learning & coding that would be spent browsing textbooks + internet.
I've written a blog post responding to the letter about maths and AI signed by 25 Fields medallists. As with the Leiden Declaration, I didn't sign it, but I agree with much of it and welcome its existence. gowers.wordpress.com/2026/09/17/w...
