🎉 The preview of our community-powered device database is live!
Think "Wikipedia of smart home devices." Powered by real-world usage from thousands of Home Assistant users who opted in back in February, this is just the first step.
More to come as we keep building in the open.

The State Department has just put out a tender, offering funding of up to $3 million to European organizations who want to fight against "Supra-national institutions" - presumably the EU - and governments who seek to regulate the internet and end Western Civilization.

I've been in UX for 40+ years (I started at Apple). Recently, I've been working on bringing UX to FOSS projects, and I see this attitude far too often (but not always!).
It's terribly exciting to see this thread get so much support and love. There is hope yet.
if your response to “users aren’t dumb, they have their own motivations and incentives and it’s good to try to understand those when you make software you want people to use” is “well actually, users are dumb” I’m sorry, but you are part of the problem
If you’re in Europe, you’ll want to check this out. They’re trying to push chat control through again, and this time the votes are stacked against us:

We are so excited to share the first design ideas for the @openhomefoundation.org Device Database!
We build in the open, and that means sharing work before it is finished. So here it is: a clickable prototype of the Device Database, and we would love your thoughts on it.

We have not settled on a final brand yet, so think of this as a working direction. The foundation is browse, search, and read. Every device gets a clear verdict on local control, cloud dependency, and support. No grades, just facts.
From there, we have ideas for richer device pages and community editing, but we want to get the foundation right first.
Try it and share your feedback:

Loved meeting new users and catching up with familiar faces, including people I worked with on contributions. Proud to share what we are building and where we are going as a community.

Hooked my desk bike up to
@home-assistant.io so now the office light gets brighter the harder I cycle.
It’s basically an old school bike dynamo and makes me feel like a hamster.
Currently being judged in lumens. 🚴💡
We've been talking about it for forever, but now the wait is over: the @openhomefoundation.org merch store is here! 🥳
It's a great way to support our mission and show what you stand for with high-quality swag. 👕 Read on to learn what else is in store 👇🏼

Made an important pull request today for @home-assistant.io 🙂
The Matter icon felt a bit off center because of the gravity effect. I moved it 1px higher and now it feels centered. Small change but it makes a difference.
Before > After
Imagine knowing how a device will actually perform in your home before you buy it 💡 We're building a database to make that happen!
Read our blog to find out how you can contribute 👇🏼

Experiment time 🧪
Just bought a NAS to experiment with local backups of my iCloud photos and documents. First test: Parachute Backup to pull everything down. So far, so good!
Next experiment on the list: trying @immichapp.bsky.social for photo management 📸
Let’s see how far this setup can go.
I genuinely like iCloud: it’s easy to use, family photo sharing is great, and it keeps my local disks nice and clean.
I just want a setup where I’m not relying on it as the only place my data lives.
Curious how others here balance cloud convenience with local backups?
🎨 Calling all @home-assistant.io designers!
We just launched a new Discord channel for hanging out and talking all things design.
Come join us and help make Home Assistant even better.

A while back I talked about the @home-assistant.io missile switch I made, but I never showed it. So here we go… this exists only because I wanted to have this ridiculous, over the top, oldschool switch in my home. It controls nothing, but I just enjoy seeing the state change 😅
