Notes on Math Culture

Peter Keep@mathprofpeter.bsky.social

I've collected some things I've written down over the last while about culture in mathematics. Feels like a good night to post them. Notes on Math Culture www.peter-keep.com/2026-10-24-m...

I don't follow Toronto politics closely enough to recognize council members and stuff beyond the actual mayoral election, but I'm happy for my Toronto friends and I hope every major city elects people who love their city and the people who love there into leadership

Trash talk, extremely physical play, barely any 3s hit.. the MNBA is the soft league actually

You absolutely do not have to hand it to Evangelical Christians, but I guess it's nice that I don't need to walk back any Harry Potter fandom as an adult, they were cooking when they said HP and JK Rowling were problematic

This is an extra funny point because each and every item on the list has had tons of people complaining about the ways that they have gotten worse from a user perspective as they have expanded into requiring larger data center footprints.

Watching the MNBA version of C*itlin Cl*rk and it is stunning how similar and annoying the viewing experience is. Big differences otherwise, like fan base for one.

Incredible sequence for the Thunder, Chet stuffs a dunk at one end and Jalen Williams slams home an alley-oop at the other. Building goes nuts

Grading some stuff for different classes, and three students wrote that they liked the assignments they had. Mostly just pretty normal test-like questions, but a nice little lift for me to read!

I've seen enough*, Raps are going to spiritually repeat, the 8 year gap doesn't matter it's still going to be a repeat in my heart *Haven't seen near enough, so excited to watch a lot of this

This is why we have multiple screens! Important events on the big screen and fun but ultimately unimportant events on the medium screen.

This post is unavailable.

It's a cursed culture that looks at something as pure as "learning" and says oh yah we gotta commoditize that, yah fam we gotta extract capital from that for sure, don't forget to monetize the process, it's only good if we can do that

It's not just tech bros that are doing this (but yes, they are)! It's not just Republicans (but yes, they are)! It's not just the College Board (but yes, they are)! It's not just the big publishers (but yes, they are)!

Angel Reese with 27 points on 13 shots and 10 rebounds (7!!!!! offensive rebounds), and a big fuck you to anyone who said her game isn't fun to watch

Every time I hear about the people pushing teaching from scripts I feel like we're in completely different professions. What do you mean you want to run your class on a script? What do you mean you want monolithic interactions and experiences? What are you even talking about? (shh I know the answer)

Mostly hearing about this in K-12, but it's hard to imagine that those people will stop there but also delineating between K-12 and higher ed teachers like this (and trusting higher ed to teach effectively without standardized scripts while assuming K-12 teachers can't) is gross by itself

Could see that Angel attacking the rim drive coming a mile away. She's been begging for the ball on these switches. Nice to see her keep her head and finish over a tough Kiah Stokes contest, not getting too frustrated.

I love hearing about the stuff my friends (you included!) are doing in their classrooms with their students. You're all creative and cool and thoughtful. It helps overpower how much I dislike hearing about the stuff random colleagues are doing in their classrooms with their students.

All I see is how many companies have a hold of our kids' data. Good thing data leaks never happen with ed tech companies, because that would make all of this look really irresponsible

Like, to check my kid's summative math assignments/grades, I need to use one app. But to check the same kid's formative assignments/grades, I need to use a different app. And then there's a whole other app for communicating with the teacher about those assignments/grades.
