Really excited to announce a joint symposium between Africana and Digital and Computational Studies at Bates May 14 (evening) & 15th (all day). There is a CFP up for oral and poster abstracts with the option to apply for funding for early career researchers. Pls share! www.bates.edu/afroalgorhyt...

WTF is happening here? AMS is listed as a partner... do they know what is happening? I say this in the most gracious way because I was part of a math working group for this early pilot work, and it was the opposite of everything Heritage Foundation stands for & @cdelawalla.bsky.social has receipts!

Colette Delawalla, PhD@cdelawalla.bsky.social

Hey @apsphysics.aps.org...why the hell are you bringing in Heritage Foundation supported people to steer the direction of the NSF????? www.aps.org/initiatives/...

When people are like "WhY WoUlD TrUmP ShUt DoWn DaTa CoLleCtIoN?" it's because the data doesn't lie like the Trump administration. When people in power compromise independent data collection, THE FIRST QUESTION should be "WHAT THE HELL DO THEY WANT US TO NOT SEE???"

Yet more context to evaluate this week's announcement of NSF investment in "foundational" research. It is hard to build a foundation when the administration is actively undermining NSF capacity to issue awards and support use-driven basic research at institutions nationwide.

Dan Garisto@dangaristo.bsky.social

Scoop: For nearly a year, NSF has struggled to make new grants. Now we know that it will not catch up. In fact, NSF will award just 6,100 new grants—a 30% y/o/y decline, itself down from a previous avg. of 11,000+. In fact, the last time NSF awarded so few grants was in the early '80s.

"A source cited by Fox News told the outlet that agents have been instructed only to pursue traffic stops targeting individuals with serious or violent criminal histories." This is the same line they've been trying to feed us all along. This is no policy win by Collins or anyone else. #AbolishICE

Lots of good points in this piece. In addition, the scolds saying people shouldn't advocate against data centers are missing an important point -- there is widespread, bi-partisan anger about the way data center developers are doing these projects, and it makes organizing easy. 1/

This is a good reminder. A lot of people have been looking at the content and not as much at the big picture. @timnitgebru.blacksky.app reminds us that we need to beware the ethics washing and understand the histories and motivations of these organizations.

Well, with this official Vatican + Anthropic mandate, I guess it was only a matter of time when the religion of effective altruism, worshipping so-called artificial general intelligence, merged with entrenched religious institutions.

We need more conversations, not less. More public engagement, rather than hiding and hoping that the threat will dissipate. More frank discussions of the ongoing harm and the missed opportunities to transform our world for the better. And we cannot wait until 2029.

When Johnny DuPree won his Mississippi Senate seat in November 2025, it marked the first time Hattiesburg residents would have a Black senator representing them in Jackson, even though 51% of the city’s population is Black. The U.S. Supreme Court has reversed the ruling that made that possible.

I continue to be befuddled at how many supposedly novel "applications" of these technologies amount to doing a solved problem less accurately.

Peter Keep@mathprofpeter.bsky.social

Incredible that the only way to get the machine to pronounce the name correctly relies on the solution we already have! We solved mispronunciation already, without needing this! Truly a perfect encapsulation of these AI applications: "fixing" an already solved issue with added dehumanization

AI nonsense aside, the Gowers post links to an article titled "Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for Problems in Additive Number Theory". I looked at it, curious what the author had to say about equity and inclusion in number theory, or in math more broadly. Spoiler: Nothing

I don't want this to get buried by other news today

Breaking: Trump has fired the membership of the National Science Board, which is oversees NSF. I have confirmed separately with multiple now-former members of NSB.

No, turning over activities designed for your learning to a bot does not free you. Undermining online learning hurts access to learning, especially for the not-wealthy. Had a great discussion with @mjgault.bsky.social of @404media.co about Einstein and other online course autocomplete systems.
