We have not the least hesitation in saying, that two or three years, in the education of almost every individual in this country, have been thrown away upon studying what they did not understand." (1841)

Understand what they learn? It may be asked; what else can they do? We answer, that they may commit it to memory, may recite it, may even make a fair show of knowledge, and yet know nothing.

The soaring costs of public universities is a political decision. When these schools predominantly served white students, they tended to be free (UC, CCNY, etc.) But as the number of students of color has increased, funding for the public universities has decreased. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...

Oddly enough, too, the children who solved the problem learned more reading, writing and arithmetic than did other children of the same age, grade and mentality who had had routine lessons in two near-by rural schools. 4/5

They graded higher on standard tests, and they had in addition admittedly gained a mature and inquiring viewpoint lacking in the other children. Moreover, in the opinion of several observers, they had energized the life of the whole countryside. 5/5

They were, in other words, to have no reading or writing or arithmetic or geography at all except as these formal subjects came incidentally into the course of the adventure. So they set to work with their teacher to find out what the possible causes of typhoid are. 2/5

They made a minute survey of the farm. They got the farmer to move a manure heap that was dangerously near the house. They bought fly traps and swatters and helped the farmer clean up the place generally. Since then there has been no more typhoid on that farm. 3/5

I have to write this book faster.

Man, this is all so weird to navigate as a noob. Like, I’ve seen stuff of his that really interested me, I don’t have wider context- then I see this and I’m like wait, what am I missing? I feel like I’m walking into battlefield with no idea who the sides are.

One of the society’s objectives was to steer its publications clear of any religious or political controversy. Its secular focus distinguished it from its rivals, such as the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge

“We don't need an analysis of DI to know that we teachers are not realising our dream. Most of us don't walk into the classroom each day with unwavering confidence that today all 30 of our children are going to understand everything we're preparing to share with them.

What Follow Through began was an international endeavour that, today, offers us a profound hope: there is a solution. A technology exists that can guarantee our success in teaching children, developing their minds, inspiring their hearts - every child, every day.” 🙄🥴

the “terminally online ecosystem that has abandoned public schooling as something worth preserving” is certainly something that deserves a bit more reporting in big outlets @annieabrams.bsky.social @jenniferberkshire.bsky.social

Benjamin Riley@benjaminjriley.bsky.social

As I've dug into this story, I've realized Alpha is just part of a larger terminally online ecosystem that has abandoned public schooling as something worth preserving. That in my view is the big story here, Alpha may live or die, but the Silicon Valley intellectual ecosystem will endure.

#iTeachMath Arithmetic really can't get much love in any century: "Years ago in most schools (and even today in many schools) the whole program was highly formalized. The material presented was frequently above the maturity levels of the pupils and it was often extremely uninteresting to them.

Drill was the prime method of instruction. The typical pupil understood but little of his lessons in arithmetic and he enjoyed none of it. He moved through the grades getting little understanding of, and hence deriving little benefit from, the study of arithmetic

@rweingarten.bsky.social: In January, we're going to see the effects of Medicare cuts. The amount of money that this administration is spending on tax cuts for the rich, a forever war, and more - instead of what working people really need - is staggering.

Although we should not forget that we ought to teach knowledge for the purpose of improving all our faculties, still we must remember that we should also teach it because it is wanted for use in the world; 6/8

we must teach it in the way in which it will be wanted and used in the world, and also in conjunction with those things that will render it useful. We should not teach any subject so as to separate it from every- thing else, and render it practically useless 7/8

Their authors are satisfied if they present a proposition, regarding number, under one point of view, when it is ten to one if the child can apprehend it thoroughly unless it be presented in many lights, and under many varieties of language. 4/8

In fact, the whole of Arithmetic is too apt to be taught as a series of tables of abstract number, and the pupils ever after find it difficult to extricate themselves from the deep and narrow ruts into which they have been driven. 5/8

"There was no need for a manual of this kind twenty years ago. At that time arithmetic was generally viewed as a tool subject or as a drill subject, and the teaching process was not very complicated.

The children’s books carried the burden of instruction. These books told the children what to do, showed them how to do it, and gave them plenty of abstract examples as practice to develop their skills.
