2026 state of #marketing from Think with Google: "Stop selling the ultimate outcome and start celebrating intermediate steps. Break down loyalty programmes and customer journeys into smaller, instantly gratifying milestones." Bottom line: live in the present. 👇

On this day 20 years ago, #GoogleDocs was released. It's not as venerable an old machine as #MicrosoftOffice, but Google's office suite is no longer a spring chicken. It's worth remembering when we get frustrated that the today's alternatives aren't as robust. Give 'em time. They're catching up.

For a long time, my only daily social media platform was Reddit. I loved — and still love — Redditors' depth of knowledge and incredible ability to solve problems for others. But over time I noticed something...

As I spent more time on Reddit, I became more and more anxious and negative about the world. I felt an urgency to dismantle and disengage from the effed-up reality around me. Now, I see what happened: I began to see points-of-view on Reddit as the norm. When in fact they represent a minority view.

So, reminder to self: Go grab a coffee with a friend, play badminton with your kid in the backyard, rewatch Moonstruck with your partner — do all the stuff that makes our flawed world beautiful. And yeah, you can do a lot of beautiful stuff online, too. Just remember which echo chamber you're in.

This weekend my e-reader went haywire, and it made me pick up a paperback I hadn't read for a while. Ah, the joy of that weight in my hands. The silky paper and the gratifying swish when I turn the pages... Like it's responding to me. Sometimes analog just feels friendlier.

This is worth repeating: Writing is thinking. So if we outsource everything in the writing process to AI, guess what? We're not thinking. Am I poo-poohing AI? No. I use LLMs daily for ideation, research, and feedback, etc. But the best LLM is still the one sitting on my shoulders. 😉

"Successful people do this." You see it? It's the way "successful" is shorthand for "rich." But what about the person who earns enough and spends extra time with family? Or struggles financially but has deep friendships? Or chooses a different path to "success"? Success can mean a lot of things.

▫️ AI can't engage you in a personal story – the kind that makes you feel connected to another human being, the kind we've been telling since we painted cave walls (and no doubt before that). #ai#tech

"I går udskrev Mette Frederiksen folketingsvalg. Vi ved ikke, hvem der danner regering efter valget. Men vi ved, at uanset hvem der sidder i Statsministeriet, så sidder Big Tech stadig på vores digitale hverdag. Det ændrer ingen valgkamp på." #dkpol #dktech danmarkskifter.dk/email/2f7f39...

This is where I'm at this #monday: practicing #mindfulness but thoroughly distracted by an exciting potential new #communications and #marketing project with a client... 😀

#WritingAdvice from Isabel Allende: “When you tell a story in the kitchen to a friend, it’s full of mistakes and repetitions. It’s good to avoid that in literature, but still, a story should feel like a conversation. It’s not a lecture.” #creativewriting #writing #writingtips

The #StoryGrid Commandments give writers an excellent toolkit for tightening scenes. It may not work for every author, and there are other scene models out there to check out. But I recommend looking at Story Grid – it contains lots of great ideas for writers. #writingadvice #writing #bookcoaching

One of the most important things I’ve learned from #StoryGrid was The 5 (or 6) Commandments of Storytelling. Keeps my scenes on track. Every Scene Must Have: 1. Inciting Incident 2. Progressive Complication(s) 3. Turning Point Prog. Comp. ⬆️ 4. Crisis 5. Climax 6. Resolution #WritingTips #Writers

Paul gets out of his room, accidentally knocks over a ceramic penguin, and puts it back. But Annie notices: "Paul, my little ceramic penguin in the study always faces due South." That's the penguin firing like a gun.

Anne Allen offers the famous Chekhov line: "If in the first act you have hung a pistol on the wall, then in the following one it should be fired. Otherwise, don't put it there." Consider every item a potential gun. How will it go off later in your story?

ME: Could the reader be yourself, then? Yourself now? In the future? Or maybe in the past – you as a kid? PAUSE. Tears spring to her eyes. HER (visibly overwhelmed): I... ME: Take your time.

HER (places a hand on her chest): My son. I didn't realize until you asked ... I'm writing this for my son. Sometimes asking a question – and then another, and another – is a kind of alchemy.

I can't fathom why I do this to myself, but I recently finished another of Adam Nevilsl #horror #books. The Reddening took me longer than The Ritual, because I took a break after the midpoint, which horrified me so much I couldn't continue. Doesn't sound like a recommendation. And yet it is.

The AI book list and general enshittification reminded me that I've been credited as blurbing hundreds of books I never have, including books by Patti Smith, Amy Tan, Sidney Sheldon, Joyce Maynard, and Elmore Leonard? And I can't get these fake blurbs taken off publisher and bookstore websites?

"Beware: learning more is a smart person’s favorite form of procrastination." - Mark Manson Case in point: Before I finally wrote my 1st novel, I owned 50+ books on #writing. Today, with 14 books published, I'm a bit closer to balancing things out. Dunno if that makes me so smart, tho. 😆 #writers
