Oliver Nunn: "whoever is the politician who is going to be the [Victorian] energy minister is basically going to be the minister who gets left without a chair when the music stops. “Over the next three years [this is] the period where all of the chickens come home to roost.”

The coming three years will be exceptionally tough for Victoria’s next energy minister, experts say https://reneweconomy.com.au/chickens-coming-home-to-roost-for-next-victorian-energy-minister-whoever-it-might-be/

genuinely amusing for the party positioned on labor’s left to outflank them on…. across the board income tax cuts. broken country lol

It's a little confusing to me that the same WA Government is choosing to not set any interim GHG emissions reduction targets but is also aiming to close its coal power stations in 2031. I know WA's emissions are mostly oil, gas, and industry, but still...

afr.comYallourn operator locks in 2028 exit as mine wind-down beginsThe owner of Victoria’s oldest coal-fired power station has pushed ahead with plans to progressively close down the open-cut mine supplying the plant.

'The power station expects to have enough coal in the existing mine footprint to make it to 2028, but restarting overburden works would be very expensive.'

Analysts "said that, unlike Origin’s Eraring coal plant in NSW, Yallourn’s profitability had been “severely eroded” by market conditions and any decision to extend the life of the facility beyond 2028 was likely to require “a substantial payment by government”."

It's not a trade-off in action, but it's a trade-off in discourse: there's too much focus on 'turning down the temperature' and 'increasing politician's security' – an even less effective idea! – and not enough focus on improving people's material conditions.

Additionally, an uncomfortable conclusion from mental health practitioners and experts, including those interviewed for this article, is that compulsory treatment for some people – through to institutionalisation – may be the best individual and societal outcome.

A more civil political discourse would be good, yes, and would lessen the risk of violence. I am arguing that better social supports, incl. for mental health, would have a greater effect.

I have done some spreadsheet noodling on possible scenarios for gas use in Australian data centres and I think this might calm people down a little ( @ketanjoshi.co see what you think), but via alarmingly enormous numbers that are only calming because they are simply not feasible in eastern 🇦🇺.
