Hi all, I'm Marko, a software engineer living in Germany. I work as a Golang web developer and run a development company. I'm happy to help people who want to 🔸start programming 🔸get started with Golang 🔸transition from being developers to freelancers or creating their own dev companies

When learning programming, start with the basics. Avoid frameworks. Focus on understanding core programming concepts. The choice of language isn’t that important.

If you want to learn programming and get into software engineering, it's important to not give up. It’s not too hard, but there’s a lot to learn, and it takes time. If, after six months, you feel like you know nothing and everything feels jumbled in your head, don’t worry – that’s normal

I just launched a SaaS for developers who run their infrastructure on plain Docker containers. It helps you collect and view all your logs in one place. Features are still coming. I would appreciate any feedback. 🙏 #buildinpublic dockstats.com

dockstats.comDockStats - Centralized Docker Logs and Metrics MonitoringMonitor all your Docker containers from a single dashboard. Collect logs and system metrics across all hosts with one lightweight agent. Built for developers using Docker in production.

I’ve never understood why tech companies use puzzle tasks (like leetcode) in interviews and base hiring decisions on them. Especially for the seniors. Sure, it's important to know the basics but a software engineer’s day-to-day job is much broader, and solving puzzles is almost never part of it.

Learn the following languages if you want to see: Java -> what OOP looks like Clojure -> what a functional language looks like Golang -> what a procedural language looks like JavaScript -> what a language made in 10 days looks like

Is it time for a bigger code refactoring? If you can't explain to your non-technical client, in plain English, why it's necessary, then it’s probably not the right time yet. (Ideally, we should never end up in this situation, as refactoring should be an ongoing process done in small steps.)

I've used k8s and microservices for years while working for other companies. In my own company, I simply use docker and a monolithic service. It works just great.

If you build a business, don't fall into the trap of learning the latest programming language and tech just because it's cool. There are plenty of examples of how people failed because they wanted to pick the shiniest new technology for their products. Just use what you already know.

k8s is a great tool, but only if you need it. The microservices approach is also great, but only if you need it. For my clients, I use simple docker composer and some basic shell scripts to deploy monolithic applications. That's all I need. Keep it simple, don't overcomplicate.

Run away from these people as fast as you can. They are ready to blame you and to make your life miserable even if it's their mistake

Last week I posted that we were migrating over to Hetzner from AWS How did that go? Amazing well #buildinpublic 🥳 We halved our costs while upgrading all servers to 3-4x their prev sizes We had resp time spikes that weren't sitting well with B2B customers during US stock market open hours, now:

If you want to dive into freelancing, listen what @rjmccollam.com has to say. Very valuable source of information.

RJ McCollam@rjmccollam.com

It's been 11 years since I quit my 9-5 to go #freelance full time. The year before I quit I had only made $15k as a freelancer, but ended my first year having made $50k. I wrote about it at that time, but still have thoughts. A 🧵... rjmccollam.com/first-year-f...

Clients mostly don’t care about the technology you use. They care about results and how to make money. When it comes to building websites, WordPress is still No1.

Nat Miletic@natmiletic.bsky.social

There are so many ways to build an awesome website with WordPress! If someone tells you that you're doing it wrong, don't listen, they are just gate-keeping. The only thing that matters is if the client and your visitors are happy!

I never underestimate the importance of developers' soft skills. A developer with great technical skills and poor personal/soft skills can harm your company. Both skills are equally important.

I professionally do programming every day. In my free time, I do it as a hobby, for free, because I love it. Some people don’t understand that.

Talking with a friend tonight: So, you’re building a game app. Why? “For fun.“ No seriously, why? “For fun.“ But that’s not like you, how will you make money from it? ~shrug~ But if it’s really popular how will you monetize it. …I give 3 ways. Oh, now THAT makes sense. 🤦‍♀️ #buildinpublic

People start valuing simplicity only when they are oncall and when their phone rings at 3AM

There is nothing worse than going four layers deep on an abstraction during debugging only to find it was for something that could and should have just been hardcoded.

I don't use k8s for my clients. All these apps are internal business software apps. I simply use docker compose. Does anyone else use docker on production?

When I built my first SaaS, I thought: 'Let’s build it first, and the clients will come.' And indeed, I built it. But they never came. Building a business without marketing is worth nothing. Then I realized the true value of #buildinpublic.

I used to work remotely for years, and it's pleasant if your coworkers are great people. If someone thinks it's not possible, check this 👇

Nat Miletic@natmiletic.bsky.social

My amazing team is truly remote. We all work from home on 4 different continents. And I wouldn't trade that for anything.

The husband asks his wife: "Darling, am I the first man you've slept with?" She replies: "Yes, honey, you are the first. With the others, I stayed awake all night."

The phrase: "You just need one right client for your business to take off" I didn't really get that until it happened to me. So I can say it's really true and you should never give up.

A good software developer is able to look through the business's glasses. Many developers only pay attention to technology and disregard the business. Don't be one of them.

There was a little plus button on users' profile images indicating that I don't follow them. Now it's gone I have to click on each person to check if I follow them. It's so annoying. Why was it removed?

For those who don’t know, @denicmarko.bsky.social is a living encyclopedia of all programming tutorials and tricks. I have no idea where he finds all of it, but hats off to him! 🥇
