I have tons of sympathy and empathy for the story and struggles of Michael Sweetney. But God I wish we had all had more sympathy and empathy back then. Rest in peace big man.

List of people to have recognised me in life now reads this: a) Guy in the queue for KFC at the southbound M1 Woodall services about 14 years ago b) Kosta Koufos (don't ask, I don't know) c) Rob Dover

Just had a real life "Leonardo DiCaprio pointing at TV Screen" meme moment when I turned on Only Connect on iPlayer to see @markdeeks.bsky.social on my screen! Cool to see you in some context other than Basketball Nerdery!

Also shoutout to @markdeeks.bsky.social and his soothing, authoritative vibe - love that! Hope you're all still in it Mark! 😌

(22x07) Une de mes pref de cette saison, celle-là est très perso et me donne énormément de plaisir. La réponse est très simple mais c'est un vrai angle. Il manque Little Talks, qui était en spare. Quelques secondes de bonus fort plaisantes.

Having won over the hearts and minds of the British public - or the complete opposite of that, it's hard to tell - we will be back on your screens at some point in October. New flamingo shirt, same overall vibe. I'm sorry, Victoria. #onlyconnect

It's been a decade since I last overtalked and underperformed on a TV quiz show, so it's time for a new one. Here we go again. Only Connect, BBC Two, 24th August, 8pm. We're never beating the thruple accusations.

IDEA: Third-place playoff to be held immediately after the final. Everyone filing out the stadium as the game kicks off, people packing away during the first half, only sound in the stadium is the hoover being run round the terraces. Could do it in a pub car park.

Everyone in England is uniting behind the football result but let's not forget we still face tremendous issues as a country. For example, Tesco have stopped doing their three-for-two offer on crispy potato slices.

Beautiful time to be English. Winston Churchill, fish and chips, Prince William, Three Lions fallen empires, crumpets, Factor 50 sun cream, Jude Bellingham, we've got it all. I might even like Wonderwall now.

I have managed not to do any gatekeeping about the fact that my whole country is doing its nut at staying up to 2am for this one-off England game, and frankly I deserve a medal.

Oh you have to stay up until 4am to watch us lose in the World Cup against Mexico? Yeah well I would stay up until 5am to watch JamesOn Curry play for four seconds at a time and watch the Kings play three power forward lineups. Miss me with it. (Medal rescinded, but worth it.)

LeBron James, 41 years old - still the NBA's biggest market-mover, the one holding all the keys, and still better at basketball than almost everyone else on the planet. Mark Deeks, 41 years old - slept a bit weird last night and hasn't been able to turn left all day today.

Just a few hours left for Khris Middleton to sign an extension and avoid free agency. The most the Mavericks can offer him is a four year, $208,834,639 pact that runs through 2030, but Middleton may be wanting to see what he can get on the open market instead.

Always found it fascinating how a few NBA players treat LinkedIn like middle managers. "I'm happy to announce I have started a new role at Shooting Guard at Dallas Mavericks" oh right yeah cool I remember seeing the ad posted but the position wasn't right for me

Absolutely delighted to report that after four perfect hours, my stream died at this exact moment. I therefore have no idea how the fifth penalties went, but can only imagine they went really well and am thrilled by Arsenal's victory.

I know I'm biased but this is an incredible defensive performance. To use the American sport parlance, they had absolutely worked out all their coverages, knew exactly what was coming, ran their knackers off and got their first. The unstoppable force met the immovable object in it's immovable face.

All those times over the last two decades Arsenal needed to be able to shut teams down, and couldn't do it. All the stuff it cost them. Do not take for granted just how good they are at it this year. I don't care if it's an interesting watch for the neutral.

Dedicated forums for smaller user bases that allow for the formation of actual communities >>> whatever this is. We all made the wrong choice 16 years ago and we need to revert.

Had the dog now for five weeks and we finally heard him woof. It was at the sight of a cat. His first cat. Don't think he knew what to do, so he moonwalked, which tbh is what most of us do upon the discovery of any new information.

Flashback to the time I went on a date with a highly educated woman who maintained there was no such thing as genetic predisposition, and when I used the example of how many fathers/sons/siblings/twins played top level basketball, she took it as validation of her point that it was about upbringing.

One of the more frustrating nights of my life. I don't think you can upbring LeBron James's physical tools, Sophie. And if you can, then I'm angry at my parents for raising me all fat and slow.

"If ever you get me a dog, that will count for like the next six birthdays and Christmases combined." Ladies and gentlemen, you are in the presence of the smug grin of a man who until 2032 is officially off, the, hook. Welcome Tyson!

It's kinda fun listening to the announcing team struggling to balance the professional requirement to praise this thing with their innate desire to rip on it.

The single best change that can be made to All-Star Weekend is to stop putting the Dunk Contest on last. It's not the showpiece any more and is far too hit-and-miss to be your closer.
