Look. The argument is very simple, I'll explain. 1. Consciousness is mysterious; neuroscientists don't quite understand how it works 2. LLMs are mysterious; LLM vendors don't quite understand how they work 3. Therefore, LLMs are consciousness. In logic we call this an "extremely correct syllogism"

Software engineering could and should be done with the same care as any other type of engineering. This is a post in honor of Margaret Hamilton (and also a subtweet of all vibe-coders everywhere).

RIP Margaret Hamilton, the brilliant computer scientist whose contributions to software for the Apollo Guidance Computer were absolutely crucial to the Apollo Moon landings. What I love about philosophy: anyone can participate. There’s no gatekeeping. What I hate about philosophy: anyone can participate. There’s no gatekeeping.

look, if you can't explain it in a tweet to a hostile audience who has never once exhibited a charitable understanding of someone who disagrees with him, then it doesn't exist. simple as

My sincere philosophical advice would be to focus on the mechanism: they are fairly well understood and thus tell you that it would be extraordinary if sth like understanding would emerge from the machine

If you go from 1) "this tool is very neat and precise" to 2) "it's gotta be more than just an LLM" and then to the weaponized skepticism of 3) "maybe we also LLM?", that's a failure of imagination between 1) and 2) (which M. Mitchell clearly anticipates)

My sincere philosophical advice would be to focus on the mechanism: they are fairly well understood and thus tell you that it would be extraordinary if sth like understanding would emerge from the machine

Physicalism v dualism is simply orthogonal to this, you don't need to larp using the worst versions of both! Brains and transformers can still be different if physicalism is true!

Just remembered, a propos, the engineer at a uni fair thing, who could not understand why he was morally obligated to *not* press the doomsday button even if "someone else would do it instead"

YouTube recommends "Prime Àlvaro Recoba was Unbelievable" – no. No he wasn't. He did not have a "prime". This is Charlie Brown had hoes for football nostalgia and I will not stand for it. It isn't true.

Maybe a weird observation but the moderation bot talking about using fancier (and more expensive!) models as if it would make any difference is peak AI brain

Dan Nguyen@dancow.bsky.social

AI *should* be enabling people with worthwhile ideas to build projects that they otherwise couldn’t. On the other hand, it also enables people who have the mindset of “how can website with 660K pages be bad?” 🫠

If actual people are flagging this you know they don't have they slightest clue how the tech works, just pure implied anthropomorphisation

This is a very good, in-depth post that aligns very well with what I also observe in Software currently! Also chuffed that the Borges I suggested made it in, very cool!

New blog post: "A sufficiently detailed spec is code" I wrote this because I was tired of people claiming that the future of agentic coding is thoughtful specification work. As I show in the post, the reality devolves into slop pseudocode haskellforall.com/2026/03/a-su...

Yes, hello, is that God? Yeah, hi. I have a complaint. You gave me this brain that’s designed for finding berries and avoiding lions and now people are ‘just circling back’ to see if we can ‘move the needle’ on ‘key initiatives’? NONE of those things are berries.

"It’s been a while, so quote this skeet with your favourite $20 dollar word." autochtone

Amyville Hoyrror@amyhoy.bsky.social

"It’s been a while, so quote this skeet with your favourite $20 dollar word." pellucid nacreous evince vertiginous i'd usually trot out "sesquipedalian" but you really just can't use that in a sentence

Important to note that the difference between a design prototype crafted by hand with HTML, CSS (what I aim for and like I believe @set.studio offers) and a vibe coded prototype is that you can actually use the code from the first one for the final product.

I am currently writing down my thoughts on coding with agents, and yeah that feels like a great one-sentence summary of the first 1000 words

Eva Ogbe@evaogbe.bsky.social

Vibe coding produces code with a bus factor of 0 from the moment it's checked in

Well sometimes I use this to be polite when I really want to say "I don't want to build this because it is bad design qua design and will make the product worse" (such is my arrogance) but point taken that I should find a better way to say this

Robin-Yann Storm@rystorm.com

Whenever an engineer says "It's not possible" always remember that what they actually mean is "I don't know how to build that" which sounds different, but means the same thing.

Some more 🔥 "A pure 'pixel-perfect' approach treats every instance as a unique snowflake, which is the antithesis of a scalable, component-based architecture."

🔥 "So, if 'pixel perfection' is no longer a viable goal, what should we be striving for? The answer, I believe, lies in shifting our focus from individual pixels to design intent."

Trying to roughly collect and categorise ways that LLMs could be considered actually useful and one major category emerging is just bandaids for broken stuff

Dr Panti Bliss-Cabrera@pantibliss.bsky.social

Last night I met a guy who said everyone in his office uses ChatGPT "because you just type in two lines and it generates a whole email for you!" And I *very correctly* replied that "no one wants that 'whole email' they just want the two lines - and they all hate you"

ChatGPTing e-mails that need to be formulated properly?Write less and accept communication in bullet points. Need RAG because no one finds anything on your damn website? Fix your information architecture! Transforming PDFs into structured data? Why didn't you invest in actual data infrastructure?

LLMs in this case are a shortterm and likely unsustainable bandaid for issues that are already caused by underinvestment and shorttermism, mostly appearing in proximity to bullshit tasks (following Graeber), i.e. where we do box-ticking, duct-taping or taskmaster-responding

For what it's worth, "Tailwind solves problems that are made worse by our current organisation of labor and its gender aspects" is 1) true 2) not a difficult synthesis to make since all participants in this discussion are 90% of the way there

Ed@ed3d.net

“Tailwind solves problems in frontend software development or it wouldn’t exist” is apparently now defense of the patriarchy. ok

Rewrote marinaeschba.ch to Astro. I made the site when I too deep into combining frameworks, but now I tossed out a lot of guff and replacing it with vanilla CSS. Really the best technical solution if you are comfortable with the cascade and know the new features!

Love Young Frankenstein and this is a great shout but the boring (but true) answer is that Kubrick did Strangelove, Space Odyssey, Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon and Shining back to back

Jeremy Pober-geist 👻@jpober.bsky.social

Producers-Blazing Saddles-Young Frankenstein is the greatest three-film sequential release for a director in cinematic history. Anyone else who made three movies that good dropped some bombs in between
