Swiss Topo Swatch @kennethfield.bsky.social Ken managed to acquire this super rare Swiss Topo Swatch. In 2012 Swatch gifted this model to employees of the Swiss Federal Office of Topography to celebrate the organisation, its founder General Guillaume Henri Dufour, and the "Dufour" map. It was…
Non-cartographic book rec: "Automatic Noodle" by Annalee Newitz is a cozy dystopian scifi about robots starting a noodle joint in San Francisco. Gave me powerful Golden State feels! Newitz even used Joel Pomerantz's map Seep City to ensure the city hydrology worked! us.macmillan.com/books/978125...

For 35 years, Donna Goldstein has used GIS to help Palm Beach County students learn, connect, and stay safe. She even studied the impact of GIS for those learning English, with reading scores that jumped 38%. www.esri.com/about/newsro...
"The Wisdom of the Crowd" relies on the principle that people who are wrong are equally likely to guess over as under. Wrong answers cancel out and leave a weak signal of rightness behind. This works for stuff like "how many jellybeans in the jar" but not for emotionally charged outcomes.
Polymarket got the Brazilian election completely wrong. The glorified gambling platform had Flavio Bolsonaro's odds at over 80% all the way up to the day voting took place. Lula ended up with 51.8% of the vote. futurism.com/future-socie...
This looks like a cool event that you should check out! Antonio's map of Prudence Island is one of my favorites at The Map Center!
On Nov 5th (7pm), I'll be chatting about cartography with my former Hopkins professor, Cassie Hansen. The GIS After Dark series is free to the public; however, you need to register to attend. #gischat #cartography advanced.jhu.edu/event/gis-af...

One of best maps of our time is @jakesteinberg.com’s Minnesota state fair smell map, and thanks to his #nacis2026 presentation about it, I have learned about DEEP FRIED RANCH DRESSING!
Google is not the final arbiter of map data. They can call the Atlantic ocean "Albert" if they wanted to. This is only a story insofar as it demonstrates that Google has discovered a limit to its acquiescence to the whims of the administration.
“.. According to Trump, Pichai responded: ‘No, no, no — this time I’m not doing it… Oceans are different, sir. They cover really a lot of countries. Please don’t ask us to do that.’” @variety.com $GOOGL variety.com/2026/digital...

Enjoy this "Pocket Monsters" Map (wink wink nudge nudge) from my very talented friend Dylan!
New work! I spent a couple months craftin' a huge (4'x3'!) watercolor map of Pocket Monsters for @desertbus.org's annual charity. Wrote a bit a blog post that's half about the making of the painting and half origin story. Check it and the map out here: moriartynaps.org/here-be-pock...
The crimes against geography continue. There is a process for moving historical objects. It was, unsurprisingly, ignored to serve one man's vanity.
