I guess I'll spend tonight mourning yet another failed interview in my 16 month long job search by doing some recreational coding. Have to stave off depression with some fun once in a while.

Trying to get a software job when I have little kids and a full-time job feels almost impossible. I had a take home for a full-stack prod-ready app and I couldn't get it done. I lucked out getting work without a take-home in the past but that's no longer a thing.

Craziest recruiter call ever: "Hi we are looking for a Golang engineer" "Hi, I've used it to resolve bottlenecks, but our primary language was node.js" "Okay, bye" *Hangsup* No beating around the bush anymore I guess...

So if AI is automating developers, months is now days, shouldn't we have an explosion of tools? I see a lot of innovation for tools to make tools, but not a of tools made from those tool-making tools. Ya know?

Vibe-coding (vibe-engineering) is like you're an expert ice sculptor carving a swan with 5 deranged ice sculptors with chainsaws who have never seen a swan. You have to describe it based on similar birds but sometimes you just bust out the chisel the old fashioned way. #AI

Alright so OpenVibe made crossposting a no-brainer, so I threw my ancient Tumblr account into the mix. Maybe I’ll even crosspost to LinkedIn. I think this is a good a time as any to start posting project status updates again. Only hold up will be the character limits. This will be my litmus test 1/2

I have a heap of projects to go over but first I need to see how viable it is to just dump them into multi part threads. Will those work on tumblr? Only one way to find out 2/2

I still can't process I've been stuck in level 1 helpdesk again for over a year now and no one will hire me anywhere. When recruiters call for software jobs and I have to act like I'm cool but really I'm crying

I've started deep diving into advanced NestJS, Elixir, C#, general full-stack skills I might be missing. I'm always just short of a job. All my JS/TS and Rust and 7years of enterprise experience seems to be useless to employers. There must be some trick to finding tech work in 2026... I'm exhausted

I keep trying to tell myself that just because I haven't been able to find another developer role in over a year doesn't mean my career is over. Probably.

I love the idea of kid's menu being subpar because: 1. The kiddo spit out that one artisnal meal you made and you never quite got over it. 2. Your kid gobbles slop up like wtf 3. Restaurant's know it's kid's cheat night and they can dump ketchup/BBQ/cheese on it and kids'll think it's 𝕱𝖎𝖓𝖊 𝕯𝖎𝖓𝖎𝖓

You know how tired I am of LinkedIn engineers telling me coding is dead? Engineering is alive but the AI types and fixes all the code. But why? That's the fun part. Just like art everyone wants to automate the fun part of everything. What's wrong with everyone?

The one upside of generative AI is that it made me value human-made art more. Art that didn't really impress me before feels way more meaningful now. Thanks slop, you made me appreciate human creativity more than ever.

The fact take-home coding interviews take time-taken before submission into consideration means the tech industry really doesn't want moms or dads. How dare you have children and current jobs that take up your time. It's a battle royale just to get a job, while I'm holding toddlers.

A recruiter today act like it looked really bad that I didn't have a software job in almost a year. I was back at tech support because no one would hire me or hiring company went under. I was hoping potential jobs would look past this economic disaster. No one thinks I can do it. Are they right?

Today I got reprimanded by a helpdesk supervisor for putting a ticket under "Guest" because the email is example.com. She said those emails exposed info publicly. I tried to tell her that domain was reserved by IANA and perfectly safe, but nope. I want to go back to being a software engineer 😓

Poor is not wanting to spend money to deploy on Vercel so you learn about docker composing a NextJS app with Nginx on Hetzer instead. In the long run this feels much slicker anyway.

There's a bug on LinkedIn that shows all the jobs as 0 applicants. There was a time when you could actually apply for a job and not have to compete with 100,000 other desperate people. I miss those days. Applying with the bug is weirdly cathartic, like I stand a chance.

I posted this on LinkedIn, literally just my homepage with a new shader background. I dig it but I definitely need to rebuild my website! The more content I put out there the more likely I'll get a job... Maybe... In hindsight the dark mode button should switch the GLSL colors too, dangit #ForHire

What am I doing wrong, why can't I get a job? I was laid off 9 months ago. I'm tired of being poor. My wife is door dashing so we can buy some new cheap Halloween costumes for the kids. There must be a way to make money by building software.

I've been building a Rust WebGPU engine for the past 4 years and I couldn't even get an interview for a job building a Rust WebGPU engine. Didn't have to nail it, just wanted a shot. Used up a LinkedIn "Top 3" doot for it. They couldn't even bother to download my resume. 😞

Coding is what will help me escape poverty. I have decades of it, I understand so much but still not enough. I need to treat it more like a business, not a passion. No one hires Rust, not easily, not yet. But everyone hires Java and C#. So my next app needs to be one of those.

On second thought maybe I'll do drawtober instead of drawlloween. It's easier to make a really polished piece every 5 days and I like their art prompts better. No one is watching this stuff anyway 😗

#Drawlloween 2025 Day 02 "When you witch upon a star" Got a little carried away with this one. Relearning the nuances and bugs of this engine. Figuring out better recording means for CRT shaders.

I'm going to try to do #Drawlloween 2025 with all content displayed with my game engine, Petrichor64. We'll see how many I can get done! Day 1 "Heads Up" (Hoping to release the latest build this month, literal years in the making 😵 )

Got a reply to a recruitment agency: "No employers are looking for your skillset at this time" You'd think I listed myself as royal slop sniffer or something. This economy is going to devour us alive.

Maybe my problem is I keep treating software like art. Like something beautiful. But artists are poor. I need to build like a desperate person would, and fast. I'm having trouble separating my passion no matter how critical the task is. There's a time for art, and a time for survival. We must live.

🎨 I’m a veteran game artist open for new work. I’ve been illustrating, directing, animating, and designing since 2000 -not just pixel art (though I love it). Clients include Minecraft, WB’s Space Jam, Unity and Rami Ismail. If you need visual worldbuilding, I’m your person. DMs open, email in bio

I'd love to play around more with training small LLMs, because I hate the idea of wasting so much energy and I want to use my own local hardware. Here I'm trying SmoLLM and unfortunately it seems to not understand me well. Also it gets into these The Shining-style dialog loops.

It's been about 8 months since I was laid off and for most of that time development became painful to me because it was all about desperately looking for work. But for the first time today I just worked on Petrichor and suddenly I was enjoying it again. It's like I love programming or something.

I don't like self-plugging but it's been 6 months and I'm running out of money. Full-stack developer #ForHire backend, frontend, forwards backwards, web, desktop, games, 2D, 3D I can do it all. I can fix your broken vibe code app and deploy it. Small jobs welcome. Referrals REALLY welcome...

Base44 just sold for 80 mil$ and it's only 6 months old. it spits out prototypes like chatgpt but it also wires backend like psql and presumably nodejs. The problem is it suffers from slop-shoveling like everything else. Looks shiny on the surface, bugs and jank and debug hell after.

My cover letter from now on: Dearing hiring people, I'm a super cool dork, the best kind! I'm hella fire at solving problems, in fact I'm kind of annoying about it. But I'll tone it down. I mean you COULD use hardware acceleration but that's okay. I'm sure no one will notice. Your pal, Nick 🫶

Got turned down for a life changing 3D web developer job because I didn't have enough professional experience in 3D web development. 😮‍💨 How do you even get professional experience in 3D web development specifically? Or 3D period? I can't even find jobs normally.

Found myself between developer jobs. I should post a looking for work blurb but I'll do that later. I took an overnight job with an insane amount of downtime and it's allowed me to finally start finalizing silt-lua. I'm retooling Petrichor64 to accept it as well. Wasm/web ready update coming soon!!!

Trying out OpenVibe since there's just too many Xwitter replacements. Loving the idea of cross posting. May as well mention I'm FINALLY back on my rust lua compiler and having success with adding gc-arena for actual garbage collection. Feels nice after being segfaulted irl for the past year ✨

You are up to date.
