as promised, i've just published my Q&A celebrating 10 years of writing articles for my site. i got way more questions than expected, and greatly appreciate anyone who asked a question or is planning to read this article you can find it here – maddy.tech/10-year-q-an... 😊

maddy.tech10 Year Q & A | General | Maddy MillerTo mark ten years of writing, I answered an overwhelming number of questions from readers I never expected to have.

turns out i've been writing posts for a decade (😩) later this year, and i was suggested to do a "10 year Q&A" post- if you're interested in submitting a question, i've put up a form- forms.office.com/r/CUh4ScqNJc :) feel semi odd doing this tbh, but do find Q&As introspective 😌

i've just written about the problems CGNAT & IPv4 exhaustion causes from a user experience perspective, focusing more on how it affects people and users rather than the actual technology behind it. you can check it out here! maddy.tech/ipv4-is-a-ux... :)

maddy.techIPv4 exhaustion is now a UX problem | Technology | MaddyMost discussions don’t touch on the places where CGNAT is an inescapable reality. For many users IPv4 scarcity still feels like a theoretical issue, and they design the internet accordingly.

i've just written an article answering a question i've been asked a few times recently; whether the recent explosion of non-JS-based JS tooling is a sign that people are giving up on the language / that it's being seen as "bad." - maddy.tech/javascript-e... 😊

maddy.techHave we decided that JavaScript is bad? | ProgrammingMost JavaScript tooling is being rewritten in non-JS languages. Is this a sign that JavaScript is bad, or is it a sign that we’re finally taking it seriously and forcing it to mature?

The final release for WorldEdit 7.4.0 is now out! You can find it on our Modrinth page- modrinth.com/plugin/world... release notes in quoted post 😊

a few people encouraged me to write a 2026 edition of my post from last year, where i went over what parts of the JS ecosystem i was watching/leaving behind in the new year- you can check it out here! 😊 maddy.tech/2025-javascr...

maddy.techThe JavaScript Ecosystem: What to watch in 2026 | ProgrammingLast year I wrote an article about what I was going to keep an eye on in 2025 in the JS ecosystem. It was fun and introspective to write, so here’s the 2026 edition.

i was looking for like, handbag hooks to try putting them up on a wall to free up some space after moving recently, and all the ones that exist seem like such awful ideas to use? all super thin hooks that'll 100% cause damage to the straps if it's hanging there for a while :/

same with wall hat hooks- everything seems to be made for caps that have that strap thing at the back, rather than proper full hats (like the one in my profile pic), which feels like it'd dig into it too much am i just too protective over my things? 😅

Australia is enacting a <16 social media ban as of tomorrow, with most sites using algorithms to guess your age, with ways to further verify if it guesses wrong. so curious how many sites incorrectly mark me as <16 due to being a Minecraft modder lol

trying out Outer Worlds 2- i _love_ this setting. it: * consolidates motion sickness stuff together * acknowledges what it's actually for (which means it'll probably actually work, rather than be superficial like many games) * lets you adjust for your own severity

very useful that Google clearly could tell what i wanted, given it highlighted the only relevant part of the output- but decided i probably wanted to know about something else entirely, that it even admits doesn’t even have four variations i googled “4 versions of the scream painting”

pro tip: don't take an ancestry summary from someone's blog post, ask an AI to generate an example person based on the ancestry estimates, then send it to them asking them how much it resembles them. that's a very weird thing to do :)

I’ve written an article on some trends in data I’ve found around my website, and AI search engines. I’m concerned how well blogging as a medium can actually survive this trend, if things don’t change much from their current state. madelinemiller.dev/blog/ai-sear...

madelinemiller.devWhat do AI Search Engines mean for Blogging? | Technology | Maddy MillerAI chat bots are becoming ubiquitous in many areas of life, such as replacing online search engines. How does this affect blogging?

Update on my Facebook account- someone saw the tweet and unbanned it 😌 I've written about my experience here, covering how social media is becoming borderline essential to function in society, and the impact that being banned can have- madelinemiller.dev/blog/dark-si...

madelinemiller.devThe dark side of account bans | Technology | Maddy MillerI recently lost my Facebook account for two months, and was significantly cut off from certain aspects of society during that time. This is the dark side of account bans.

So a few weeks ago, some random kid on Discord managed to get my Facebook and all other Meta accounts suspended, with no chance of appeal and no way to make new accounts; hours after sending a nonsensical malicious threat. It’s horrific that this is actually possible

The worst part is also that the multiple Meta engineers I’ve been in contact with either directly or indirectly have basically told me the only way to appeal it is to fly to the US and sue Meta in Californian small claims courts, because they ignore Australian summons. Like wtf

okay i actually love this game? i’m not finished part one yet, but it might be one of my favourite games ever depending on how it goes. i just love the character interaction vibes, and the filming and editing stuff 😌

Lost Records Bloom & Rage seems to actually have decent motion sickness accessibility settings 👀

so it turns out Wikipedia's page on MC Modding mentions WorldEdit, but i find it actually so funny that the only other entry in the section is on malware the two Minecraft mods: WorldEdit and Malware

i was just debugging why something was 100000x slower in my production Vite build than my dev server, and it turns out it was the polyfill for private class properties??? honestly shocked that such an innocuous feature's polyfills can tank performance like that

one of my biggest pet peeves around software changelogs, is when a release that had prior beta or alpha versions doesn’t list changes since the last stable. it means you need to then go through every alpha/beta release and decipher whether each change is relevant or not

many fixes during beta cycles are fixes for issues in prior betas, and therefore not relevant for those updating to only stable versions. it’s so hard to find the actual relevant changes when they’re split up like this

someone suggested the other day that i write up a post about my experiences self-publishing an eBook, from the perspective of a software engineer. so i did 😊 this article goes over the process i took, and my thoughts around the various steps, madelinemiller.dev/blog/ebook-p...

madelinemiller.devSelf-publishing an eBook as a developer | Programming | Maddy MillerI self-published an eBook, and found it to be a complicated process compared to tooling for software engineers. This article goes over the process and my thoughts around it.

this was honestly such a weird process, having never looked into eBook publishing before. it was surprisingly much less streamlined than submitting mobile apps to the two platforms, maybe because very few developers are self-publishing eBooks and don't notice the issues

gotta say, looking back on some older stuff i’ve written, i’ve gotten significantly better at writing since i stopped using Grammarly. i feel it made me focus on what made it happy, rather than what made sense to me and flowed well, stopping me building up my own writing skill

something i’ve noticed over the past few years (mostly since tiktok creators got really big), is that “content creator” is now a much smaller term. like i used to get called a content creator due to my mods/plugins and writing, but now the term seems to mean video creator specifically

every so often i get DMs from kids pretending to be famous/"important" people thinking it gets them priority support with WorldEdit/WorldGuard/etc (eg, university professors, Donald Trump, president of Argentina comes up a lot too, etc) first time getting Santa tho lol

You are up to date.
