Just landed in DC for work. Early. It’s quiet. Sunrise. A chill in the air. It’s hard to comprehend how we have this magnificent city—designed to run our country—and it is being turned against us.

🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨 CHECK YOUR VOTES Machines are switching them automatically!

Mickey Kuhns@mickeykuhns.bsky.social

There is a disturbing trend being seen in early voting. Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Ohio are reporting difficulties getting the machines to accept democratic votes. The machines change them back to Republican unless the voter persists, pressing several times to get the correct vote to go through.

Was watching #Chernobyl last night and could help but see how our country now has the most sycophantic, party first inept individuals in positions of power and how America in 2026 is no more capable than USSR 1986.

Solar passed nuclear in Texas 2 years ago. Now it's double. Texas is what makes this chart powerful. This isn't green ideology winning. It's pure economics. Solar is cheap, modular, scalable & incredibly fast to deploy. Wind keeps growing too. When economics take over, ideology becomes irrelevant.

If a Russian oligarch with close ties to Vladimir Putin had paid for Hunter Biden’s lavish island wedding while his dad was the PRESIDENT, Fox would be running that shit on a loop 24/7 from now until the midterms and beyond.

1/10 Life was better before 9/11. I don’t mean that my life was better. I mean our society was better. Hyperpatriotism—which began with lapel pins and lower-third graphics on news reports—eventually spun into Muslim bans and permission for explicit bigotry. It fed hatred. It fed otherism.

11/10 On 9/11, I left my office in Times Square and walked into bedlam. People feared we were at war. Bridges and tunnels were closed. I remember wondering how I'd get home and the sense of purpose of my colleagues at The New York Times, many who ran downtown to cover history as it was happening.

9/10 There is a through-line I cannot ignore: from the fear after 9/11, to bigotry, to the questioning of our 44th President’s birthplace, to the Tea Party, to a politics increasingly comfortable with xenophobia, cruelty and cynicism. Our democracy—and the beacon of American leadership—has dimmed.

10/10 And around the world, hatred and vitriol have forced their way into power. And all the while, the technology we imagined would bring us closer together has instead become a wedge separating us—because division is now the message the algorithms reward. But mostly today, I remember.

7/10 And all I feel is anger. Anger at the lies. At the avoidance of truth. At the cavalier way we failed to ask most Americans to sacrifice anything while leaving the heavy lifting to our soldiers, first responders and the myriad public servants who did whatever was needed.

8/10 Media platforms fed fear and hatred and reaped financial gain from it. Fear became programming. Outrage became a business model. And the First Amendment became the banner beneath which an industry of fearmongering could flourish.

5/10 Then cowardice revealed itself as a lack of transparency. When did we know? Who knew what, and when? It revealed itself as opportunism, eventually manifesting in an unnecessary, unjustified and destabilizing war in Iraq. And public trust corroded.

6/10 A quarter century later, we also know that the government assured New Yorkers that the air around Ground Zero was safe without sufficient data to support that assurance. People trusted their government. Many went back to work. First responders kept working. And trust eroded further.

3/10 9/11 was, undoubtedly, a clash of civilizations—a desperate, warped sect of religion lashing out at a cultural empire with surgical precision and horrifying efficacy. Deadly strikes on our financial and military centers. The date itself a call sign for emergency.

4/10 And yet the heartbreaking heroism of firefighters, police officers, citizens—and anyone who could answer the call—leaves me awestruck still. Awestruck by their bravery and sacrifice. And broken knowing that the society they died protecting is, in so many ways, worse off since they perished.

2/10 The Patriot Act. Freedom fries. The Dept of Homeland Security. Our government surveilling its own citizens. All spinoffs from the tragedy. Fear became something we could legislate. Something we could monetize. Something we could use to justify things that would have seemed unthinkable before.

If a Democrat made $2 billion off of their presidency while waging an illegal war that's spiking costs for families, Republicans would immediately call for impeachment.

No more corruption.
No more war.
No more leaving families behind.

I hope it’s clear to everyone who cares about the survival of our democracy that we need massive turnout and landslide margins to counteract the lies and cries of fraud that are coming after the midterm vote.

It’s not the Gulf of America. We don’t have a Department of War, unless you count the war we’re losing. Canada is not the 51st state. There’s no such thing as the Lake of America, The Strait of America or the Trump Center. You are not 6’3” and 225 lbs, You’re demented.

Republicans are losing because they can't run on their record. They can't run on covering up the Epstein files. They can't run on cutting Medicaid. They can't run on stripping SNAP or imposing tariffs. Americans see what is happening - and we are hungry for change.
