there is an argument to be made that transphobia is based in a desire for (biological) reproductive control, and that's maybe tactically useful for getting reproductive justice types on board but I don't think that's actually at its root. imo, transphobia is based in a desire for ontological control

[Siren wailing] it's Sunday, it's pigment o'clock ⚠️ This is your incoming Sunday pigment shenanigans/shitposts warning. Today: last batch of madder root for the year, & making paint from madder pigment (after the chore of regritting my mulling plates)

Decided I don't have the spoons to re-grit my paint-making plates now, so that canwait. Just gonna finish filtering the rest of the madder roots & alizarine made from the 1st half of roots. Then we can have some pigment shenanigans tomorrow 😊 Also turned my paint syringes. Lotta colours ont go rn!

You may be wondering why go to all this trouble? You can buy both synthetic & plant-derived pigments like alizarine ready-made. As the song goes, I do it cos I love it. It's satisfying to make & lake beautiful colours like goldenrod, alkanet or madder. You can buy dry or grow the plants yourself…

That was a previous batch of red madder lake - alizarine - that I mulled tonight while waiting for the filtration step. I also made this orange-pink madder lake pigment into paint. This comes from pouring alum then soda ash solutions through the spent roots from extracting alizarine...

Anyhoo, once you've stewed the roots at 70°C awhile, filter out roots from the dye, keeping everything warm. This can take some time. Alizarine is water-soluble so it's good as a dye on its own. Laking is a process of binding & precipitating dye colourants to get insoluble pigment for paintmaking…

I lake plant dyes with aluminium sulphate (alum) to bind the colorant, and either sodium or potassium carbonate (soda ash or potash) to precipitate it as a solid. You can also use calcium carbonate (chalk). You can get an idea of how that looks from previous shenanigans, eg bsky.app/profile/lyco...

[Siren wailing] it's that time again! ⚠️ This is your incoming Sunday pigment shenanigans/shitposts warning. Today: extraction of pinkish-orangeish colours from madder roots, after they've been digested to extract red madder lake (alizarine.) Also here's last times thread on alkanet root lake.

- it's hard to stir using a magnetic flea cos there's so much roots… So I'm just stirring it with an old chopstick 🤷 While that's cooking for a couple hours, join me for more ✨glamorous✨ art-life activities like: - cleaning glue/tape off workshop scissors with HB42 - maintaining mulling plates...

The way I deal with paint-making equipment maintenance has changed over time because disability adaptation. So I'll quote this post into another thread on that for any other spoonie paint-makers (niche, I know.) Suffice to say, I mostly hate regritting especially cos it's hard work and very loud…

OK so for anyone unfamiliar with my bullcrap, here's what's going on: - I'm making alizarine lake pigment from madder roots that have been fermented to make it easier to get the dye out - More making of madder lake pigments here bsky.app/profile/lyco... and here bsky.app/profile/lyco...

Moths in a human suit (they/them)@lycomorpha.bsky.social

So after digesting the roots awhile more at 70°C, I filtered the dye, heated it back to 70 again and laked it with alum and soda ash. (Lil more soda ash than usual because of the acidity from fermentation. The result is red madder lake (alizarine). It's exactly the colour you'd expect!...

At the workbench today we have: - big heap of fermented madder roots being heated to 70°C, cos alizarine (red) is in solution at ~65-75°C - technical info: heating block controlled by Home Assistant automation made in Node-RED, using Local Bytes smart socket & Sonoff Zigbee temp sensor w probe…

There is no future point coming where any of these people are satisfied and content. The whole point of this style of extreme, hate-driven politics is *to always keep fighting and demanding more*, forever, no matter how much you get your way. They will evolve, grow arms and legs.

How do you know these people are extremists? Because they cannot be appeased, even as our entire political/media class enforces their demands and repeats their drivel. It makes them not one bit happier, because they don’t want compliance: they want more extreme, forceful and violent measures.

Anyone who’s had this will tell you the same story and it is IMO important to understand the terror of transgender people as sex offenders is much the same thing as black-clad lads in the street shouting against migrants as sex offenders. They are different facets of the same reactionary project.

& Not all of us do survive. Ableism costs many lives. It costs communities. It cost all the creativity we could bring. Everyone's so precious about 'productivity' - you don't think helping us live or work is 'productive'? But sure. Shitting on PIP claimants & enabling Palantir will help. Aaaaaa 🙃

I am just so tired of the same old bullshit, that sick people gonna bankrupt the NHS, that welfare is the problem, that we can't possibly tax the ridiculously wealthy. As a society we're more interested in being led into kicking the already struggling, rather than actually fixing anything. Gah.

I shouldn't have to live with an inescapable fear of not being able to work, as well as chronic pain. I shouldn't have to keep finding new ways to adapt/cope with healthcare getting gutted, while being told I'm the problem. There's so many of us creatively surviving anyway. We shouldn't need to…

My muscle spasm treatment got defunded. This won't save the NHS money int long run because of all the other treatment & PT necessary. Ongoing effects of the Health & Social Care Act 2012. Money that private healthcare is allowed to siphon from the NHS. Palantir, etc etc But we're the problem, eh?

The fact that IDS, of all fkn people, is behind a report calling welfare an 'economic opiate' is both unsurprising and makes my blood boil. UK is so good at memory holing friggin everything from the ATOS scandal to how many people found that functionally there was no social safety net during COVID.

theguardian.comThe right’s scrounger rhetoric dominates the benefits debate. Labour must fight back – and win | Frances RyanThe prime minister has a once-in-a-generation chance to reintroduce fairness to the system. He has to seize the moment, says Guardian columnist Frances Ryan

IDS presided over the DWP at a time when the government's own data revealed thousands of disabled & chronically ill people died within 6 weeks of being declared fit for work. Some of us are old enough to remember yelling about how it was pointless, cruel, & cost more than it saved, but y'know.

The bullshit scrounger narrative is so ingrained in the UK that we just do the same 💩 over & over, solving nothing. But god forbid that we tax accumulated wealth/have utilities that function like actual utilities instead of profitable toys for the rich/stop private cos siphoning £££s from the NHS 🙃

Every single non-disabled person who is supporting the PIP cuts should be handed a £15k “disability costs” bill each year and asked how they plan on paying it. Because people don’t really need benefits? You’ll be able to find £15k on top of rent, food, utilities and your summer holiday? Right?

"I don't believe in that." OK, well that's good to know about you; you don't get to be a part of this conversation we're having about real issues and real problems—which are complicated & important and require solutions. The stakes are high. We don't have time to entertain dipshits and fevered egos.

"Debate" has been corrupted by codifying it into a competitive sport imo; at this point it is rarely a method for good faith actors to hit upon best solutions or refine a shared reality; it's mostly a vector for bad faith actors to keep failed and destructive ideas in perpetual zombie currency.

Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò@olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social

it's understandable to think of constructive debate as an ideal and then to figure that *any* debate is therefore a step towards political values and virtues. but I think most debates, particularly in the social media age, make conversations and outlooks worse than where they started
