Yesterday morning I stepped outside on my balcony for coffee with my wife and our neighbor. The drone was as low as it has ever been. We saw it over our heads. Below, our alleyway had turned into a parking lot for displaced people’s cars. A school next door is hosting around 1500 people.

Dit is wat regeringen zouden moeten doen. Besturen is niet “complex”. Natuurlijk zijn er dilemma’s, maar de naleving van het internationaal recht hoort daar niet bij.

🎉Very happy I'm awarded a 3-year Postdoctoral Fellowship @fwovlaanderen.bsky.social. My project uncovers the cultural roots of climate polarization by studying how an 'oatmilk elite' of well-meaning climate advocates in 🇧🇪🇮🇹🇸🇪 fashion like eco-influencers may exclude & moralise people unlike them...🌿

👏 🎉Congratulations to all awardees and canditates for making this year's selection an affirmation that Flanders's research culture is from the highest quality. Good luck! Results FWO postdoc positions, SBO projects and ERC runner-up projects: www.fwo.be/en/results-o...

I appreciate all the people recommending the Shock Doctrine. I've been thinking about what makes Trump's use of these tactics a little different. In recent decades, shock tactics were used mainly to rapidly impose neoliberal economic policies. But what Trump is doing goes way beyond that. a 🧵

Chaos and confusion. Somebody read @naomiaklein.bsky.social The Shock Doctrine as a manual, it seems. Time for people to read it again for countermeasures also.

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold. We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940. 2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

New paper: Do social media algorithms shape affective polarization? We ran a field experiment on X/Twitter (N=1,256) using LLMs to rerank content in real-time, adjusting exposure to polarizing posts. Result: Algorithmic ranking impacts feelings toward the political outgroup! 🧵⬇️

I won't lie if I say that some of the posters from the exhibition "The art of integration: 40 posters promoting #Europe" at the EU #archives in Florence made me a little bit sentimental, even sad, given where things are now. Some posters are also really beautiful and interesting to look at.
