In the early 1900s, the wage premium for going to college was the same for sons from both rich and poor families : +10 ranks (+15%) in the wage distribution. Today, the wage premium has grown for the rich but sharply fallen for the poor. We call this "collegiate regressivity".

Fall of foreign sentiment towards US and visits to US. Some data. Follow the thread.

Goldman devotes a report to foreign boycotts of US goods. 🇺🇸 “.. this headwind provides an additional reason why US GDP growth will likely underperform consensus expectations in 2025. “.. Foreign Sentiment Towards the US Has Declined Sharply”

Enhancing the lives of many around the world equals combating climate change. This shows that equity is not only just but also efficient.

Our World in Data@ourworldindata.org

More than three billion people in the world do not have access to modern energy sources, such as electricity, for cooking. Instead they have to rely on solid fuels, such as crop waste, wood, and coal, that cause indoor air pollution. This pollution kills millions of people every year.

What happened to the heterogeneity of British academia after Brexit (i.e., the composition of scholars working in the UK)? The article posted provides a preliminary answer.

Relevante hoy, con las noticias que llegan de Colombia, que finalmente ha cedido a la extorsión de Trump. ¿Por cuánto tiempo?, ¿cuál es el reverso de este mapa en términos de intervención china en Latinoamérica?

Spain suffers from impressive, frightening low fertility in Spain, especially in its northwest rapidly aging territory. Portugal is not so bad.

Andrés Rodríguez-Pose@rodriguez-pose.bsky.social

By 2050, advanced economies will face just two workers per retiree. Public finances will teeter under shrinking support ratios. Where to start? Better governance: A 1% improvement in governance could raise fertility by 8%. doi.org/10.1093/jeg/... www.mckinsey.com/mgi/our-rese...

The Occupational Earnings Potential (OEP) scale is also now fully integrated into the DIGCLASS R package, so you can construct OEP from ISCO-88 or ISCO-08 with just a couple of lines of code

OEP comes to the JRC! A @unil.bsky.social, @forsresearch.bsky.social & @sofi.su.se collaboration, in which we introduce a new linear scale that measures the median earnings of ISCO occupations and expresses them as percentiles of the overall earnings distribution

These interesting results make me think about relative deprivation (relative to other times or other groups) as the main driver of political unrest. It's not absolute but relative deprivation, that drives that unrest.

Discontent thrives not in poverty’s depths but in the shadow of lost prosperity. Across the #EU, once-thriving regions now stagnate, fuelling #discontent & #Euroscepticism. It's not hardship alone, but the ache of decline that erodes trust in #institutions doi.org/10.1080/0013...

New and interesting evidence (thread) of the positive effect of educational expansion on social mobility, despite recent scepticism.

Herman van de Werfhorst 🟥@hermwerf.bsky.social

Does educational expansion promote social mobility? In my latest study on 40 countries, that just came out in the American Sociological Review, it looks like it does. Integrating decomposition techniques with a comparative framework, 1/n
