But guess what? Farmers could be bringing BACK nature and thriving if paid to rewild Foresters could be producing timber AND natural wildlife habitat Fishermen would benefit HUGELY from no-take MPAs Our NPs could be spectacularly rich, if rangers were properly supported. There are no excuses.

Call out lifeless countryside? "Farmer bashing" Call out deadzone tree plantations? "You hate foresters" Call out our empty seas? "You're attacking fishermen" Call out our trashed National Parks? "You're denigrating park rangers" This is how they try to shut down any dissent to nature's dying.

Today marks 25 years since 9/11. 8 months after the attack, psychiatrist Simon Wessely argued that illness reported around Ground Zero was being wrongly attributed to environmental toxins, suggesting “World Trade Centre Syndrome” was driven by social and psychological factors.

Libraries make us a harder target for authoritarianism. Equal access to info, ideas, and space that doesn’t require a purchase to belong. Also: using the library means money stays in your community instead of streaming out to Amazon. 📚 What’s checked out on your card right now?

What a great article not only on faculty workloads, but how little our salaries actually factor in to most university budgets. A few highlights. First, our salaries are falling:

I do sometimes worry that all the worried headscratching about youth unemployment might be missing the point. Everyone is always talking about how it relates to the education or welfare systems, no one wants to say "well the economy just produces far fewer entry level jobs than it once did"

That there is a particular species of extant arthropod, of which most other species have been long extinct! The scientific name is Solanum trilobitum, usually known by its common name: the frylobite.

Important question for @darthbluesky.bsky.social or any other potato enthusiasts: what do you call this specific breed of french fry?

I just realized that today is Chinese New Year, the 1st day of Ramadan, AND Fat Tuesday. That means the Chinese new moon lined up with the Ramadan crescent and also fell exactly the right amount of time before the Easter full moon. An extremely rare lineup of 3 major moon-based traditions!

We used to be able to have magazines about rock collecting on shelves nationwide. Now we can't even keep a sports desk at the fucking Washington Post.

I have submitted! One of the sections had garbage writing but my good friend helped me edit the rest so hopefully it gets some grace 🫠 It's a super competitive scheme so I am not expecting anything but it feels good to try!

AAAAAAAAAAA (screams in grad school apps) Why do I need to exist as a describable entity with qualities! I don't want to be seen but give me a chance anyway!!

Looking for ways to protect yourself or a loved one against disinf/propaganda campaigns from entities with more wealth and power than you'll ever have access to? These seem totally reasonably priced and accessible. Knowledge is power.

The ACM Digital Library, where a LOT of computing-related research is published (I'd say at least 75% of my own publications), is now not only providing (without consent of the authors and without opt-in by readers) AI-generated summaries of papers, but they appear as the *default* over abstracts.
