I was content generalist for 30+ years; owned small businesses in a little bit of everything, now retired/disabled. 3D artist, anims, programming, audio/video, photography, etc. Anti-corp and anti-billionaire-- we all do what we gotta do, but we still "do"

It looks like, in the future, closed source and open source will be equally dead. Anyone will be able to build anything they want without reliance on libraries. That's the only future AI brings.

GenX could watch an asteroid coming for Earth, sip from their drink and be like, "Yeah, that seems about right." and then calmly finish the drink before even thinking about contacting anyone.

I'm not happy unless I'm working on, at least, nine things at one time. Is that compiling? That gives me time to work on that? Is that compiling too? Let's work on this over here...

One thing I hate about animation software... how everything is so 'input box driven'.... Yeah, no fuck that shit. Here's how my rotation constraint editor works in my software. Clear. Straight forward. You can see what the constraints are at a glance... and its also how you edit them.

I also have additional important information... Like, what is the primary hinge axis, what is the twist axis... what is the least important axis. My puppeteer system uses that information to drive animation features accurately.

I've been working on my animation software today... Because, there's still weak areas I need to fix. And the puppeteer mapping system needed some love to make procedural animations work flawlessly for animated rigs that have more than two legs... or weird legs... like centipedes, etc.

Will I ever make a centipede? No. But, for sure, someone who uses my software will try at some point, lol. I don't want to disappoint them.

The best thing about my animation software... It has made every other animation software I ever used dead to me... even the ones I loved. The last hurdles are polishing the weight painting... and finishing Procedural Walk for anything other than bipeds. Then I have THE best indie animation tool.

It took just about a year... But, I have a 'true' artist-first workflow, nothing that 'feels' over-engineered... and every feature has self-contained UI that doesn't poison the main animation workflow.

If anyone wants to support the absolute dumb shit I do... and explore the weird, weird, weird world of WiFi and Blutooth signals... a number of months ago, I started tinkering with this... uhh, I guess I'd call it an incomprehensible ADHD art project? www.patreon.com/lillybyte/po...

Any game released anywhere around the time of GTA 6 will be vaporized. Even if you don't play GTA 6... nearly all the streamers, gamers, influencers who usually play indie games, etc will likely be playing GTA 6. If there is a duck and cover moment for gamedev, it is anywhere around a GTA release.

I keep getting these seemingly random bills every month or two... And every single time I'm like, "WHY AM I GETTING BILLED FOR SOMETHING!?" Then I realize... oh, it is for a domain I bought and forgot about. I'm a domain hoarder. I need an intervention.

The same people who say they support you are not the same people who will actually support you by buying your products. Those two rarely meet. Once your bills are due... look at who actually buys your product vs the ones who praise you. Praise never pays the bills.

Likes aren't sales and unlikes aren't lost sales. Even people who follow me here don't even know where to fuck to buy my animation software... because I don't post it here. I post it to people who would actually buy it... not to the people who only say they would.

In my 40+ years of programming... I've built business software (that's still running to this day for some reason), art software, game engines, MUDs, MMO servers... and more... all of which was created without AI. I'm not an AI dev... but a dev that now uses AI because its finally good enough.

If you love doing everything by hand for the love of it, by all means; do what you love. Nobody is forcing you, you can do what you want. But if you need to make a living, a business; the idea there's going to be a big enough market for "100% hand crafted" games... there's not. That's a delusion.

I heard the same thing from local film photographers as my digital photography studio stomped all over their businesses, took their major contracts... and watched them close down. Most people don't care about your art or how you do something... they care if you put effort into your end product.

I disliked AI programming stuff when it was useless. But, unlike irrational people... I kept testing "Is it good enough yet?" The answer was 'No' for a few years... barely even worked as an assist. Now, since about two months ago... the answer is 'Yes'. It is good enough now.

And that is a new reality for a lot of us. The irrationality, distress, and sadness and what some are feeling is called future shock. It happens whenever society or industry rapidly changes, faster than some people can adapt. I would strongly warn against being a victim of future shock.

So, there's now a slew of major indie devs who were previously anti-AI... posting YouTube videos and having Twitch streams about how AI is now capable of doing everything they do. And they are going to be using it to have any chance of keeping pace. You can only avoid reality until it hits you.

Now, we are in a realm where we don't need game engines. I no longer need a game engine... I even stopped building my own, because it is wasted effort. I can, now, sufficiently work with an AI to build a custom engine per game, to do exactly what that specific game needs with no work-arounds.

I don't need Unreal. I don't need Unity. I don't need Godot. I can pick my favourite language, build out an entire framework/engine... for any platform I want to support at an accelerated rate than I could do, alone, by hand. I'm no longer limited to the pros/cons or debt of any of these engines.

In the end, AI is just ANOTHER game engine. That's all it is. How you use that game engine... to produce something good or be lazy and produce something bad is /entirely/ on the developer. A shit game made with AI wasn't made shit by AI... but made shit by the developer.

Pretty sure we had this whole argument way back in the day when the first game engines started allowing people to make games and software easier. People complained that game engines lowered the skill bar. Yet, as game engines got easier... great games still got made, because good dev = good dev.

They've gone from... "We hate AI" to "You still can't make a good product without experience, so we'll use AI to make better games as a product." AND THAT'S BEEN MY WHOLE STANCE... the tool doesn't make good or bad devs, you will still get good and bad games.

Do I care what tomorrow brings? As long as it isn't war, famine, or persecution on our doorsteps; like many other, unfortunate, countries that have to deal with real problems. Then no... not really. We have our problems, but they are mainly problems which make us uncomfortable, not kill us.

I've spent 40 years learning skills. I don't lament the loss. I've always embraced the next level of tools when they were viable. I will continue to do the same... I will embrace the next level of tools as they become viable, not before. It doesn't change what I love.. it changes my approach.

I could give a hour long Ted Talk on how to use AI effectively... that most people around me have not figured out because they think prompting alone gets them there. It doesn't.

My experience doesn't go away. I can just apply that experience to the new generation of tools... and use those tools better than the next person, or the new people coming in.

AI is over there making little campfire burnpits in the forest... meanwhile, streaming social media has the entire forest lit up on fire... and everybody is like, "LOOK AT THE CAMPIRE! IT IS KILLING US!"

I don't know where they are going... They are groaning and growling like they were agitated... So, I think a distant thunder cloud is drawing them.

Weather is dangerous in this game... Thunder rolls can call zombies from kilometers away... Lightning strikes can be lethal to zombies... and you.
