Useful, when it comes to the difference between Reform/Restore, to think back to the National Front in the 1970s. With the NF, the problem was reversed; a splinter group, the National Party, broke from the NF aiming to purge “extremists” & disassociate itself from neo-Nazis. But in reality, beyond…
It would be a complete waste of time to ask Restore to expel neo-Nazis or racists: as the policy is to welcome them. Reform, by contrast, say they want to exclude such people. My overt racist troll (who claims he is openly racist in local branch) is one test case for them bsky.app/profile/sund...
More British fascists cosplaying as immigration officers: 'They ask one man living at the property whether the property is run by Serco, a Home Office contractor used for asylum seeker accommodation, which the man confirms, and whether he has “paperwork”, which he says he does not.'

In between teaching & research, been making my way through Klaus Theweleit’s Male Fantasies. When you hear people carping on like this, I can’t help thinking about Theweleit’s insistence that the violent fantasies of Freikorps members were not displacement activities but reflected genuine desires.
Robert Jenrick for Reform says that Royal Marines using "lethal force" on small boats could end it in days. "Deploy the Royal Marines into the Channel. If they need to use lethal force then they'll be able to do so. I think the problem would come to an end within a matter of days."

Had a wonderful evening, thanks to everyone who came. Began my PhD studies 10 years ago this month with an event marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street, so there was an odd sort of poetry in taking part in this panel.
Fantastic paper by @liamliburd.bsky.social placing Cable Street back into history (instead of mythology), reflecting on imperialism, antisemitism and police racism.

I never met him but John MacKenzie’s approach to the history of imperialism was a big initial influence on my work on the relationship between British fascism and British imperialism. Brilliant and highly readable work. Still back him over Porter.
We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Professor John MacKenzie, a giant in the field of imperialism studies. We extend our deepest condolences to all who knew him. manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/blog/2026/09...

I know its naive to expect better of the Labour Party if you have even a passing familiarity with their long history, but there is still something outstandingly depressing to watch them repeatedly abandon the goal of 'bread and roses' for simply 'more work'.
After loads of posturing about university being a waste of money and needing "more apprenticeships for young people because university isn't for everyone", wild to have work experience spots at a supermarket as the first tangible element of this apparent shift in emphasis

let's be real: plagiarism scandals in academia happen all the time (not because academics plagiarize a lot, but just because of how many millions of faculty there are around the world) and it is never general-public news unless the culprit is a member of a minority.
